I just heard "asshat" on TV

Seriously. This bit of SDMB has made it into popular culture.

The show was Kyle XY (first time I’ve ever seen it, so don’t be judgin’). A girl was walking through the door of a coffee house and assumed the guy in front of her was going to hold the door for her. He didn’t, it hit her, and she spilled coffee all over herself. She said “What, would it get you kicked out of the Asshat Society to hold the door?”

What’s next, I burning your dog?

“Asshat” predates the SDMB. I believe a similar thread found it originated on That '70s Show in the late '90s.

“asshat” has been around for decades.

ETA: So close! But I think it even predates That 70s Show. And didn’t Red threaten to make Eric wear his ass for a hat, rather than call him an asshat?

You don’t really think asshat originated here?

Asshat did not originate here.

Just adding to the various people pointing out it really didn’t originate here.

Holy triple simul-post DopeMan…

Considering the first episode ran in 2004 you might want to re-check your facts…

I found myself uttering that word in front of the family gathering this month. I’ve never used that word out load before. It is drilled into my mind thanks to the board.

And thank god you did. The point simply would not have been made with merely 4 posts saying exactly the same thing.

The first episode of That 70s Show aired in 1998.

That '70s Show debuted on August 23, 1998.

It first ran in 1998.

Or, on preview, what he said.

Interesting the page hung during the simulpost. Is that what kills the boards? Nah!

I stand corrected.

kinda threw me. Sorry.

I know, right? Where would we be without needless redundancy?

Understandable mistake. We all assume, as impressionable kids, that our generation must have coined all those forbidden curse words that we end up learning. Kind of the same thing here.

Specifically used in episode #224, “Red Fired Up.” Final draft 3/15/2000. Linky

The Marianas Trench?

And I think it was already in use on this board by that time.

I was fairly certain that it didn’t have its origin on this board, but it seems like this place is its biggest vector. Maybe I’m wrong about that.

But that show was the only time I’d ever heard it outside of the the boards. Definitely a surprise.
