I just moved from the US to Scotland

It may yet turn out to be a Quebec-style “Neverendum” (welcome to British politics).

And lang may your lum reek!

Stockbridge is really nice. My parents lived close by until a decade ago. The only downside for me was it’s a bit of a hike to either Blackford Hill or Arthur’s Seat, though it’s great to have The Waters Of Leith and the Botanic Gardens so close by.

Scottish summers are great if you don’t mind taking an emergency sweater with you, and the long days are fantastic. Wait till December though, grey, damp, and it gets dark before 4pm.

OK, I’m officially a smidge less jealous now, winters being as described are an official No Bueno for my mental health. (SAD sufferer)

How fortunate for you… To be honest, at times like this I rather dread the inevitable “Lucky me, I’m getting out, bye!” posts…

Having moved only from southern California to northwestern Oregon, a matter of ten degrees latitude, we still marvel at thhe long summer days here. I can’t fathom what it must be like in Scotland.

What’s strange about this is that when I did a university year in Germany, I don’t remember consciously noticing the difference at all!

I was in Scotland in August and it didn’t get dark in Inverness until about 10pm IIRC
I wonder what it is June 22? I’m seeing 10:22pm for sunset and 11:31 for end of Twilight. Mid-August is 9:01pm and 9:47pm respectively. But nautical Twilight 10:47pm and we were at the beach at 10pm. So it makes sense.

Last night I walked home after a night out. I left at 10 pm and walked 2 miles home. It was still light out and I felt safe the whole time. No place is completely safe, but this is generally a very safe city.

The elephant in the room is that while the landscape of Scotland can be lovely in the summer months, it is plagued by that most ravenous of mosquitos, the Scottish midge.

That’s mainly an issue in the highlands. Very few midges in Edinburgh.

But a few pests at Holyrood, no doubt.

Ha! We Canadians point and laugh at any mosquito named a ‘midge’! Between midges, regular mosquitoes, deer flies, black flies, and the rare Aedes gigasangivorus which can suck a chihuahua dry in under two minutes, the Scottish midge wouldn’t stand a chance in Canadian bush country!
