I just put 50 Pesos (MEX) into my American credit union ATM. Let's see what happens.

The title says it all. I’ve been walking around with a 50-Peso note in my wallet since my last drive to Mexico, over two years ago. Due to the near impossibility of exchanging same for American currency, outside of airport exchange counters accessible only to ticketed passengers only, I have thrown up my hands in frustration.

So I put this note into the ATM envelope, keyed in a deposit for $4.39, per today’s exchange rate, and popped it in. I wonder what will happen now. Will I get a sternly reprimandatory letter? Will something worse happen?

I’ll keep you posted.

When I was a little kid, I did the same thing with an American cheque in my Canadian bank. I typed in the face value, and when the transaction went through, they simply corrected it to the exchange value – no muss, no fuss.

My wife used to work at Royal Bank here and they would cancel the transaction and call you to come pick up your foreign currency.

Of course, a credit union might be a litte more forgiving than a big bank…

Cyros - Monkeytown, New Brunswick, Canada? Just curious.

Does it matter to the Royal Bank what country the money is from? I could see banks having a problem with money from certain countries. What are the policies of different banks (from around the world) when it comes to currency from other countries?

Anyhoo…

I’m curious about that too. Is there really a town called that?

Perhaps Cyros refers to Moncton.

I just went online to my bank account. Here’s the memo:

07/21/2004 07/19/2004

Deposit Adjustment at ATM #00001131 ATM Adj/TQ3201 ATM
Non-Negot check 4.39

So they treat it the same as a non-negotiable check.

That be the place! Currently hotter than the sunny spots in Hell!

If you ever find yourself in the Moncton City Hospital psychiatric ward, say “Hi!” to my sister.
Wait. That doesn’t sound good. Let me elaborate. She’s a nurse. If you see me there, however…

*What did Batman use when he took Jason Todd (Robin II) to the cemetery?

The Bat-Hearse.*

Anyhoo…
