I just saw American History X...

I thought it was a stupid movie.

Any merit that it might have had was obliverated by the ending. What we were left with was barely disguised sensationalism and half-formed analysis of the complex problem of racism. The “skinheads are people, too” plot was an attempt to fake that this movie was not an after school special, but it didn’t really work. This movie did not provide a complex look at the problem of racism. It’s the sort of thing I would have liked in early high school- something that appears deep and political but is still very black and white and wallows in it’s own nihlistic violence despite it’s protests to the contrary.

The movie was ok, my only problem was that the character development of the protagonist was a little too much for me to buy into. I think it’s difficult for an developed adult to change what he so fundamentally believes in, more difficult than this movie lets on.
