I just saw Apocalypse Now for the first time

And I have a few questions:

  1. Why did the soldiers open fire on the boat full of animals and produce? Was it just because the woman had been sitting on the yellow canister–the one that turned out to have the puppy in it–and they were nervous about it? It happened so fast that I thought I might have missed something.

  2. When Willard comes out after killing Kurtz, the people make way for him. Why didn’t they kill Willard when they knew he had killed their leader? Were they ready to follow him just as they’d followed Kurtz?

  1. Yeah, I think it was pretty much nerves.
  1. The woman made a move towards the soldier when he went to look in the container. Of course she was trying to get her dog so they wouldn’t harm it or take it, but the guys were just afraid she had a grenade or something. Basically they were very nervous and any quick move by the “enemy” will cause them to open fire.

  2. Yeah basically, they were a death society, so he became their new King.

Well, my impression is

  1. I don’t think you missed anything. It was just reflecting the tension and paranoia resulting from not knowing who the enemy was. Where anything could become a sign that these people were a threat. And how that lead people who never intended to to commit atrocities.

  2. I don’t think there’s a straightfoward answer. But I would guess that, well, who could kill a god except another god?
