I was pleasantly surprised by Frequency, until the last fifteen minutes. It had an engaging story, some fun science fiction, interesting characters, good kid actors, interesting messes for the Adults to work through, funny scenes and touching scenes that brought a tear to my eye.
But, then the end was so incredibly lame it took away everything else I enjoyed about the movie.
Small spoiler notice In case someone wants to see it. (I won’t give any specific plot points away)
I thought the story was building up to a great ending that taught a lesson about not messing with the past, because too many things are touched like a ripple effect. Also, I thought they were touching on the main characters ghosts, and ways he needs to deal wth them to improve the place he was in life. I was expecting a bittersweet ending that had the main character learning a lot about himself, and how he needed to change some things in his life.
Instead, we were treated with an ending that tied everything up quickly and happily. And made the main character’s life absoloutely perfect. I felt cheated. I thought it would have been so much more rewarding without that happy happy joy joy ending. They could have had a happy ending, without them throwing all of that nutrasweet on top.
I hope that makes sense.
Anyway, I enjoyed the movie, aside from the ending.
pat
PS:
“Frequency” is the movie with Dennis Quaid, right? If not, ignore this entire review, and pretend I just typed the true words to the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song.
AND I liked the way the main character was seen by others… when his dad died on schedule, he was kind of messed up, couldnt commit, but had his friends his mom, and his cop buddy. As a cop, he was relaxed, well liked.
Then his dad didnt die, and he was better somehow.
Then his Mom died violently, suddenly his cop buddy gives him attitute, he is a big loser (the mom thing messed him up more than the dad thing)and he is barely a cop at all.
Ok, I’ve had to skip all of the above messages since I’ve wanted to see this movie for a while. I hardly ever get time to go out to the movies, so I missed in the theatre, and everytime I’ve gone to rent it they’ve been all out.
I hope that I like it as much as kellibelli. I’m going to try and rent it for tonight (again!).
