I Just Saw "THE THIRD MAN"!

Great flick…but the print I saw was really getting worn out…much flicker and noise on the sound track. Anyway, I have a few questions:
-postwar Vienna must have been a weird place…crawling with spies, double agents, con men (like Harry Lime) and my kind of people.
-why was Austria divided between the US, GB, and Russia?
-what “job” was Holly offered by Lime?
-the Czech woman…her deportation (by the Russians)-what was that all about?
A great movie, and I really liked the grainey quality…that really captured the grim mood of postwar vienna.
Anyway…can you visit those cool sewers under Vienna?

Actually, Vienna was divided into four sectors: US, Russia, Britain, and France, since those were the four major allies of WW II. Austria wasn’t behind what came to be known as “The Iron Curtain,” and therefore did not end up permanenetly divided the way Berlin did.

How Europe came to be divided up in the days following World War II is a fascinating subject. Volumes have been written about it. If you want to learn more, here’s a link to get you started.

If you can try and watch the Criterion DVD. It has been superbly restored and is virtually flawless.

I like Harry Lime!
