I just watched the very last episode of Futurama

gobear:

It’s already winging its way to my house, in the same box with the first season of Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Me too.

However, the real question is-

Why haven’t I seen you at any PhillyDopes?

I loved it. The opera style plot was genius. Irony running gag-genius. ‘I can’t believe that these people are adlibbing’-genius.

And the last cartoon on the billboard in the credit sequence displaying the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express crashing into a billboard which displays the Planet Express . . .

Genius.

Holy crud! You’re right!

Give some Dopers’ irritation regarding the misuse of the word “irony,” I found it hysterical that Bender pulled out a dictionary and read out the proper description of the term.

That was my favorite part, it is definitely unfortunate that that show is cancelled and crap like reality shows are still coming out.

That was a great final episode. When the robot from hell, Fry, Leela and some of the audience members burst into song opera-style, didn’t it remind you of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical special “Once More With Feeling”?

That’s three nuts I count there. You doin okay over there?

Is it me, or did Futurama get… sadder, as it went on. I mean, there were a couple of eps, more and more as the series grew, that were actually sort of heartwrenching ina way the Simpsons could never really be. Fry’s brother was the first. Then Leela’s parents. Then the Fry’s dog episode (that ending made me so sad that I’m starting to tear up thinking about it). You wouldn’t think a show that was basically a string of puns, satire, nonsense, and deliberate weirdness could have that sort of emotional depth, but someone (Matt?) was putting some real passion into those eps.

Can I get a brief run-down of what exactly happened?

Fry was bitching because he couldn’t express his feelings for Leela using the Holophone, so he and Bender go to RobotHell in order to make a deal with the Devil. The Devil tells Fry that the problem was Fry’s hands, and offers to swap Fry’s hands with those of a robot’s randomly selected from some other robot. Fry agrees, and the Robot Devil spins a wheel listing all the robot’s names, the “winner” ends up being the Robot Devil. He and Fry swap hands, and Fry becomes a master at the Holophone. Fry gets hired to do an opera, and he chooses to do one about Leela. The Robot Devil wants his hands back, and cons Leela into signing a contract which forces her to marry him unless Fry gives his hands back to the Robot Devil. Fry agrees to give his hands back, and is unable to complete his performance of the opera. When he tries to play the Holophone, the audience gets mad and walks out. Leela is the only one to remain behind, and she asks Fry to finish. Fry does, and she tells him that it was wonderful. Credits roll at this point.

There’s a hint that Leela is beginning to feel some attraction to Fry at this point, but nothing’s explicitly stated. Hopefully, I haven’t botched things up too much in describing the episode.

You didn’t botch a thing, Tucker. Although it’s actually the Holophonor.

I would give your left nut too.

Whew. Nice to know that the whiskey hasn’t taken total control of me as of yet…

Actually the ending is slightly different: Fry plays and a very shoddily drawn Fry and Leela hold hands, kiss, and walk into the sunset. Cue credits.

That was… the last one?!

Nooooooo!

sniff I’m not gonna cry… no

waaaaaaaah

The Opera Sequence was absolutely wonderful. Particularly the part about “we’re all ab libbing.”

I liked Futurama. It did seem like a place where Groening put ideas that wouldn’t work for the Simpsons, but Groening’s ideas are good to great.

Great final episode. Fox kills get another great show. Morons.

Is it me or did the golden robot, the one who asked Fry to write an opera, laugh like Mozart in Amadeus? Or maybe I’m just looking too much into something.

I’m sad that Futurama is not making new episodes, but it’s better than going on for fourteen (or whatever) more seasons and becoming worse and worse like The Simpsons. It was too soon for them to go, but it’s good that they went out on a high point.

I disagree, Rabid Child. Futurama is not going out on a high point.

Calvin and Hobbes went out on a high point.

Wayne Gretzky went out on a high point.

When something goes out on a high point, fans sigh and nod, knowing that it’s probably for the best. Futurama, on the other hand, is leaving slowly and painfully, with the fans kicking and screaming and holding on for dear life.

I’m not sure who you insulted just there, if anyone…

Re-Holophoner
Bongo comics published a two issue Simpsons/Futurama crossover (IIRC Infinitely Secret Crisis!). While I sadly have only the second issue, it does contain the canon spelling.

Re-Leela’s Feelings

I’d say that the first hint was in the ‘Brains send Fry back in time episode’. Fry(his memory of the second encounter with the brains, and of the Nibblonians being inteligent erased) gives Leela a flower. Leela looks at Fry through a hole in a photograph of her and the jerk she just dumped. She looks thoughtful as though considering the possibility that Fry might be the right man afterall. She takes the flower and kisses him on the cheek.

Another hint came when the esteemed and wise Professor created a box containing a parallel universe. The primary difference between that dimension and the one in which the show takes place is that the outcome of cointosses is reversed. When Leela ran out of excuses not to go out with Fry, she flipped a coin. In the dimension we’ve been watching, she turned him down. In the alternate universe, she accepted the offer and they are now happily married. Since the alternate Fry and Leela are virtually identical to the ones we know, this was another hint that Fry really could win Leela’s heart.

I apologize for the poor grammar. But the departure of Hubert has made it very difficult to think, or type. Not even my deathclock gives me any joy.
