A few months ago, my husband and I were driving along a country road when two raccoons ran out in front of us. He tried to drive between them, but horribly, we hit both of them, one with each tire. We turned around and went back, to see one of them lying still, and the other flopping in the road. We debated for a moment what we should do. It was very late, and the nearest vet was at least ten miles away, and the idea of getting bit by a wild animal who may be diseased was a bit daunting. Finally, I insisted that we put them out of their misery by running over them again. I don’t know if it was the right decision, but I couldn’t bear the thought of them possibly suffering for hours.
Aw, shit. That sucks, phouka. At least the cat died quickly, and didn’t suffer much.
I ran over a rabbit once. It wasn’t dead, but it sure as hell wasn’t going to live either - I’ll spare you the details. I ended up mercifully killing it with the car’s jack. 
One of the hardest things I ever had to do, even though you KNOW it’s the right thing.
Don’t blame yourself - it was an accident. The animal, luckily, died quickly.

I once clipped a low flying seagull with the front of my car on a freeway interchange. Saw it spinning to the ground in my rearview mirror. I couldn’t stop to check but as I was doing about 60 mph, I’m certain I killed that poor bird. I felt sick in stomach which kind of surprised me. Never thought I’d get broken up over something like that. Guess I learned something about myself that day. Learned something about the girl I was dating at the time too, who found the episode humorous. :mad:
Phouka, I’m so sorry. I’ve only ever hit one animal (knock wood). It was a possum. I was only about a mile from home, in a very woodsy, retired-yuppie-type neighborhood. I felt awful, but I didn’t stop, because it was on a hill where you couldn’t really pull over safely.
I lived with d_redguy and his parents at the time. (It was before we were married.) His dad thought it was funny. His mom didn’t care. I was all upset and crying. Made d_redguy go back and bury it.
I still get upset when I see “roadkill”. Stupid cars.
