I know earache remedies are wrong now, but....

Are there any home remedies for an earache? Homeopathy? Something? Because my ear hurts and it is Sunday night.

:frowning:

If you’re experiencing pain in the ear, then I’d see a doctor.

[sub]Yeah, yeah, I know, standard advice and all that, but it’s the most reasonable thing to say, I think.[/sub]

Sometimes a heating pad or ice pack on the jaw, not the ear itself but the joint, helps it feel better.

What was that stuff our parents always used, some sort of oil in a pink bottle IIRC?

Okay, major disclaimer approaching. The following remedy is presented in good faith and should you attempt this do so with utmost care.

It was done to me as a kid and it actually occassionally worked.
Basically, you form a cone with a sheet of newspaper rolled up. Place the tip of the cone at the opening of the ear taking care not to insert it causing worse problems.

Here’s the tricky part. Light the broad end of the cone on fire.
I know, I know. The premise is that if the earache is caused by a buildup of air pressure in your ear, the flame will consume the air as it burns.
This of course won’t work if the cause is infection or other possible causes.

Any way I can recall it working sometimes so just be very careful if you try it.

And, oh, put out the flame before it get too close!!!

I read something about baby oil, but I don’t have a baby. How about olive oil? Stupid!?

I know it’s wrong; the last time my daughter had an earache and we got the antibiotic but it hadn’t started working yet–she was just sobbing with the pain. I called the doc to see if there was anything I could do and they said no.

I read online blowing (on low) the hair dryer toward the ear from 18 inches. Maybe I’ll try that or the heating pad idea.

Woah, jimpatro, I’m not doing that!!!

My response is for you to read the title of your own thread, subtact the word “but”, and add a visit to a qualified physician.

Closing this thread before any more dubious medical advice slips through.
