I learned something just now!

I was sitting at my desk, chatting on #straightdope, and pondering the various things on my desk as to whether they are edible or not. Then I got to wondering how grenadine tastes straight. Nobody could tell me, so I did a shot.

Conclusions:

  1. Straight grenadine tastes like Very Vaguely Cherry, and is quite sweet.
  2. Straight grenadine does not turn one’s teeth red.
  3. There is no 3.
  4. Straight grenadine is not a marvelous beverage, and I will not be drinking it in quantity in the future.

Pardon my ignorance (that is what we’re fighting, anyways) but what is grenadine?

It’s this red sugary liquid they use in mixed drinks.

Actually, not cherry at all, it is an extract of pomegranate.

It’s made out of pomagranates, if I’m not mistaken. Also, I’ve never had to type “pomagranates” before, and I don’t have a dictionary handy, so I hope it’s spelled right…

I never said it WAS cherry, just that it tastes cherry.

But now I can add to the list of things I’ve learned.

  1. Grenadine is made of pomegranate.
  2. Pomegranate tastes like Very Vaguely Cherry.

Pomegranate is correct, IIRC. FTR, SYK, and ITF.

MOUSE.

Grenadine will also stain your pants and leave tables sticky.

So do other things.

It’s not that grenadine tastes like cherry, it’s that most people think that cherries taste like grenadine. It’s what maraschino cherries are packed in, and they pick up the flavor.

It really does taste good, so long as you don’t do it straight… Shirley Temples… Yum!

I drink that stuff straight…yummy.

Grenadine straight=yucky.

Grenadine+Sprite=yummy.
