I like Black people

I worked at a Ham store this week, for holiday help. It was in a fairly culturally mixed area. We had every age, race, gender, and identity you could think of, come in to buy a ham. But I must say that the African American customers were by far the nicest, understanding, and considerate of them all.

Yay for that. Seriously, I would have gone crazy, after selling several thousand hams if it wasn’t for these great people!

I like white people. I work in a outpatient hospital sort of thing, and if it wasn’t for the white people, I would have gone crazy. They were courteous and non-demanding.

If I was Canadian, would I call them African-Canadian?

[sub]or we could be in Poland, then it would be African-Polish. Hey, what do they call their Indians? Canadian Indian? Polish Indian?[/sub]

(just curious)

I work in commercial real estate and God Bless the wealthy investors and large corporations. They are so nice to work with. They make life worth living!

There are stores that sell only hams?

At least the OP sounds sincere. Usually when I hear something along the lines of “I like __________ people”, there is a thinly veiled qualification that soon follows.

Hey Stccd, thanks for the compliment. My people appreciate it. I’ll get on the ghetto phone at tell them all about it.

HEY SHANTELLIQUA, STCCD JUST FOUND OUT BLACK PEOPLE CAN BE NICE!!!

Really, it’s all good. You’d be surprised at how many people automatically assume black people behave a certain way. And not in a certain good way. Go on Stccd. Spread the word.

I cannot think of any that were unkind or finicky or nasty in any way. They were eager to be good people, and that really made a difference in my day, and at the same time it opened my eyes.

If it makes a difference, I live in the Cincinnati area, and after all of the race issues around here, I was somewhat surprised, and very positively affected.

As for the stores that sell hams, there are two major ham places that I know of. Honey-Baked Ham, and Heavenly Ham.

BTW, aenea, its basically just a politically correct term. Not so sure that it is 100% valid, but that is being politically correct for you.

Yeah! How dare his/her ignorance be fought!

(counting down to the hour when this thread will be locked…)

I give it a couple of hours more

My favorite story in this vein is George Wallace, a southern dyed in the wool racist and segregationist from about the time Strom Thurmond ran for Prez as a dixiecrat on the platform of hating black people.

I mean Wallace was about as bad as you can get.

And then he got and partially paralyze, IIRC.

He lives for like 15 years after this but he’s institutionalized as he requires constant care.

Guess what color all his caretakers were?
Well, for about 3 or four years he goes on hating niggers, because that’s what he does best, and damned if he’s gonna change just because they’re the ones saving his life every damned day.

Then his inner bigot has a bit of quandary with the fact that the people taking care of him are nice, pleasant, professional, courteous, and otherwise entirely decent and worthy of praise. He wants to go on hating black people, but goddamn! This constant decency is more than a man can take.

A couple of years after that (it’s difficult not to admire the ongoing endurance of Wallace’s bigotry which managed to hang on for 6-7 years despite a constant and daily assault of reality to the contrary,) Wallace recants.

He becomes an advocate for civil rights and against segregation. He becomes an activist, and tries to convince others, and, I think his voice made a little bit of a difference.

Why should the thread be closed? Sccrd experienced something that she or he found noteworthy. Sure, I poked a little fun, but why would saying that you like black people and think they are nice and polite warrent a thread closing?

Only because of the direction that this kind of thread usually takes. I might be wrong about this one, though. I’ve been wrong before.

You are right about that TVGuy. But we won’t let that happen!
We, the people, black and white will unite in politeness and understanding AND NOT LET THIS THREAD SUCCUMB TO THE UGLINESS!!
[sub]But we can still poke a little fun, right?[/sub]

There’s another thing about George Wallace.

Here’s a guy who spent the bulk of his life as basically the worst racist in America. The most public notorious racist of his time. The worst enemy that a black person in America had.

When he recanted, and apologized he ran again for office, and basically swept the black vote.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better case of both redemption in a man, and the capacity for forgiveness of people so horribly wronged.

It’s the kind of thing that if you’re not careful it might end up giving you some faith in humanity.

Here’s a link if anybody cares:

Very nice post Scylla.

I giggled at the capitalisation: The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia

What? I just came here to poke Biggirl.

This was going so well too.

Great posts about Wallace, Scylla. I knew all about how he recanted his ignorant views after he was shot but hadn’t made the connection about his care givers. That was a nice revelation that you shared too, Stccrd.

Right-on, sistah!
