$100 for 50 rounds  That’s expensive! Around here a typical trip to the range costs me about $20, ammo included. It breaks down like this:
-100 rounds of .22 ammo, $10.00
-Lane rental, $10 first hour
If I wanted to rent a gun to try out, tack on another $5.00 for a pistol or $10.00 for a rifle (including fully automatic). Now, going full auto WILL jack up the ammo consumption!
Where I’ve gone (indoor handgun) I take my gun, plus rent one of theirs. Two hours (that’s their minimum) $40 total, including eye/ear protection and targets.
JohnClay:
As a couple others have noted, check out Airsoft pistols.
The type you describe uses 6mm plastic (or corn) bb’s and is chambered by hand, ‘single’ action.
They also have CO2 and electric versions which auto-load.
I picked up a couple when I was in Japan. The company makes them as ‘real gun’ replicas and gives them names that are slightly different from the gun they’re trying to copy. In Japan, since real pistols are illegal, nobody flinched when they saw the toys because they knew they were toys. In the USA, depending on where you live, the Airsoft products might be illegal because they look very real. They started getting popular in the States about 4 years after I returned.
And, of course, there are pneumatic and spring-operated dart guns, as well.
And this thread is bringing to mind the scene in True Lies in which Bill Paxton’s character (Simon the fake spy) whirls around in his chair at the used car dealership and fires a dart gun at a target, then says, “Gotcha!”
Watch the scene closely. He’s less than 6 feet from the target and he still missed!
Good luck; BE CAREFUL!
You can (still) put your eye out, kid!
“Airsoft weapons, under current legislation, irrespective of muzzle velocity, cannot be lawfully possessed in Queensland. As an Airsoft firearm cannot be used in Queensland lawfully it cannot be imported into Queensland.”
Two hour minimum - huh. Around here it’s a one hour miniumum charge, then $X for each additional half hour. That could be because my local range is almost always full. It does make it much cheaper!
My toy handgun I got off of eBay arrived. It has a laser and when you pull the trigger it makes a gun shot sound effect and the slide thing pulls back. Thanks to another bidder it cost me $100. I put my maximum bid at $150. If I had just waited until the last minute to bid it could have cost me $20 or less. It is better than a replica or real gun in some ways because the slide action happens without having to have it loaded.
This thread actually inspired me to check out eBay for a new gun and annoyingly I lost an auction for one of these beauties to a last minute sniper, although as it turns out I may have dodged a bullet there. Apparently it has a really hard trigger pull and the magazine has a tendency to jam fairly often, but it sure looks nice and there aren’t many retailers that import it so it doesn’t come up for sale all that frequently.
Here in the USA, $300 will buy a nice REAL gun, heck, my last purchase was a 1987 Marlin Model 60 .22, with the original 22" barrel and tubular magazine that holds 18 (+1 in the chamber) rounds, it’s about 90% new condition and runs great
The price? A miserly $75
Unfortunately, the 60 would not be legal in Australia, as it is a semiauto, and I’m sure they would not look kindly on it’s 18+1 capacity…
…Of .22 LR
Heck, this version is considered an “assault rifle” in New Jersey, due to the mag capacity , but the currently produced “neutered” version isn’t, as the mag was shortened to hold 14+1…
MacTech, the Marlin Model 60 was my first gun. Mine had an interesting bug, when shooting in cold temps it would occasionally shoot multiple round bursts. I told my dad about it and he took it away, I wonder what he did with it.
