It’s straight man smilie, indifferent smilie, flat affect smilie, dispassionate, neutral smilie. It’s the smilie I would most like to see and most likely, overuse.
I don’t have a recommendation for a smiley, but completing the set does appeal to me.
I do recommend smashie to every other board I use, though. I love it.
As much as I hate smilies, unfortunately we need something to indicate sarcasm, as a disconcerting number of readers are incapable of detecting it without some kind of signpost.

Sarcasm in real life is a matter of tone of voice, and often body language, neither of which work well on the Message Boards. If it’s carefully-written sarcasm, then I agree with Big T, it should be obvious. But YMMV: one person’s sarcasm is another person’s deeply held political beliefs.

To be fair, that one is supposed to be animated.

As a relative newcomer I find smilies useful.
Until people get to know each other and their tendencies it’s difficult to perceive their tone of “voice.”
And yes, we are joined not only by readers who have difficulty discerning tone, but also the metaphoricaly challlenged.
I am, I guess, metaphoricaly blessed.
