I long ago gave up on American music ...

For years and years I’ve been deadlocked. I’ve been listening to the same songs, more or less, for decades. What I liked gave out in the mid-to-late '90s.

Since then it’s been all the same crap that sounds almost exactly like Bush, which I don’t like. I’ve come upon several English bands that I really like in the past few months, almost incidtally, and want to know more.

Not English bands, per se, just good stuff rom abroad.

I don;t know how to download music, but links to home pages and YouTube thingies with videos will be great.

I do not have any particular favorite donomonation: Even if I don;t understanbd the laguage and I like the sound, I’ll go for it.

I’m just looking for something new.

Thanks.

I’m a bit confused, are you asking us to help you get back into American music, learn more about English/foreign music, or both?

Here’s a Finnish band, though the lyrics are in Swedish. A little country, some calypso, and extreme metal:

Finntroll - “En Mäktig Här”

And what did you like then?

There’s plenty of great American music. You just probably haven’t heard (of) most of it.

Are we supposed to guess what kind of music you like?

I think he likes things that sound like Bush, but not TOO much like Bush…

No better place to start than here if you want real American Music.

Ah. Sorry, it was really late. I like Classic Rock but I’m sick of listening to it. I liked the alternative stuff that was coming out in the '90s but nobody really listens to anymore but some of which is still occasionally played on the radio (STP, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins).

Stuff I’ve heard recently is Rogue Traders and Editors.

You’ve probably heard them already as ther heyday was several years ago, but you can’t beat Scottish band Franz Ferdinand. Take me Out; Walk Away (plenty more stuff in the sidebar on YouTube there).

The Zutons are quite jolly.

As are The Kooks.

Another Scottish band, The Fratellis are also excellent, writing almost exclusive Ohrwormen, and they always have some serious hotties in their videos.

Bush pretty much ruins American music for me too.

I agve up on it about '81, '82.

It sounds like you are into alt-rock/indie rock from the mid '90s. So these are modern day indie rock and roll bands.

David Vandervelde - Very Neil Young
Charlemagne - Think Pavement
White Rabbits
Band of Horses
Arboretum
Two Gallants
Deadly Syndromes
Foreign Born - Shoegazer indie only better
Tell me what you do and don’t like out of any of these bands and we’ll work on it accordingly.

Oh, and to restore your faith in American music, The Hold Steady.

That, or this.

They’re from Olympia.

Jesus, he really needs to tune his guitar.

Guster’s Satellite is the perfect modern song for old classic rockers. They’re British and that album is also pretty good, although this is the outstanding song.

They’re not British. They formed while attending Tuft’s University. Still good though.

Oh. Well, even better for the OP then.

Hmmm. Not bad, but … did these guys start out as a Bruce Springsteen tribute band? All that song needed was a glockenspiel.

I’ve heard the comparison before, but their lyrics are way cleverer than Springsteen, and the musical variety they employ in their other tracks does get away from the similarities.
