I lost my iPad

At the grocery store this morning. I use a shopping list app and take it with me on my weekly trip. Usually I put the iPad in one of my bags as I exit the store but forgot this time. I loaded my bags into the car then returned the cart to the cart corral with the iPad still in it :smack:. The store says no one turned one in today and I was too cheap to get MoblieMe. Bye-bye iPad…

Even though it is locked I just went and changed all my passwords (e-mail, Facebook, here, online banking) and canceled the 3G service. I haven’t given up hope but the way things have been going lately I don’t expect to see it again. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Whoops.

That sucks. I hope you somehow get it back.

Ouch!

And I was feeling bad about losing my wallet.

Sorry dude.

can you remote wipe or brick the device?

That’s one of the features of the MobileMe service… not sure whether it can be done outside MobileMe.

MobileMe is required for that and I didn’t want to spend the $99 for it (even though I spent how much on the iPad itself?). I’m not too worried though–the only info I would be worried about is password protected (e-mail, Facebook, Netflix, iTunes) and those passwords have all been changed.

AT&T flagged the sim card and IMEI for it so if anyone tries to activate the 3G service they won’t be able to. It won’t help get it back but maybe it will give the person who has it a reason to return it to the store. Although the Enuff Z’nuff songs on it are reason enough to keep it ;).

If it does show up again I guarantee MobileMe will be the first thing I sign up for. Then I’m handcuffing it to my wrist so this never happens again (my girlfriend suggested using pen and paper for the shopping list but that’s so…1990…).

I am pretty pissed at myself right now. Never lost a cellphone or my wallet or anything like this in the past. Maybe I can find a way to blame it on my ex-wife.

No offense…but who takes the iPad to the store with them? :dubious:
That’s not much less silly than someone hauling a laptop with them.

I’m so sorry for your loss. :frowning:

I used to keep a book or two in my purse to read while waiting in lines, now I carry the iPad instead. Weighs less and it’s more functional. Dammit though now I’m considering MobileMe.

Wow, that’s - ouch. Sorry about that!

I get it with the digitized shopping list - but on my iPhone. I would never take an iPad to the grocery store - that would be awkward anyway, and a bit toolish, and just asking for trouble.

Like people with laptops on the El, or in the exam room at the doctor’s office. Really? Can’t put the farking thing down for a half an hour?

I know how I would feel just losing my iPhone, so I feel bad for ya, really!

The good thing about getting older is being able to afford all the latest cool gadgets.
The bad thing about getting older is that you lose them.

On a whim I stopped by the store on my way home tonight and they had it! One of the cart guys found it and turned it in to the manager. I tried to leave a reward for the guy who found it but the manager made it clear that it would be unethical for him to accept it when the guy was just doing his job. Instead a thank-you letter to the store and the corporate office will be send tomorrow.

And I’ve learned my lesson. It’s back to pen and paper for now, until I feel I’m responsible enough to not leave expensive electronic gadgets in random places. And MobileMe is going on it before I do anything else.

Of course this is all my ex-wife’s fault. If we were still together I would not have had the freedom to buy the iPad which would not have led to my leaving it in the shopping cart.

All kidding aside, I’m glad to have it back and I will definitely be more careful in the future.

Yay! And yes, a real letter goes pretty far now.

Glad you got your iPad back.

Maybe the designers of the app can work in some sort of proximity alarm function so if you’re too far away from the ipad it cries like a baby.

Wow! You oughta go buy a lottery ticket while your luck is running so high, Cell Guy.

Make sure you mention the employee by name and make sure his actual manager knows about it (which he sounds like he does).

Unfortunately, that kind of honesty is seldom rewarded in an environment like that. Sad but true.

Glad you got it back. Wise choice in a pen and paper. 'Sides, the thing is almost the size of a small laptop. Why do you want to carry that around while shopping? An old flip phone has a memo pad if you want to incorporate electronics into a shopping list. Use one of those :stuck_out_tongue:

If I had an iPad, I’d carry it with me everywhere I went.

I’m so glad you got it back. We so rarely hear happy endings to stories like these!

I’m amazed you got it back and happy for you, but if I were you I’d still use it. That is WHAT IT’S for.

Can’t you buy something like a case and a chain so you don’t lose it. Sure you don’t want to take unnecessary risks but things are meant to be used.

And since you can’t reward the employee perhaps you could do something nice, like give a bit extra to your church or a donation to a local charity to show thanks

:dubious:

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t built specifically for taking it grocery shopping–no more so than the average laptop is.

The iPad has primarily been billed as media consumption device; not a shopping assistant.
