So sorry, it’s an awful thing, IMO almost as bad as a human death.
Knowing you did a kindness for a helpless animal and provided it with a loving home is good karma.
I had a Smokey too. And he died the same way - kidney failure, had to put him down, wasn’t eating.
RIP Smokey and {HUGS} to Hello Again.
He sounds like a real charmer, I am so sorry for your loss.

Yes, Hello Again, they’re only with us for a short time, but what comfort they bring us while they are here!
I know you will have many happy memories of your Smokey (as do we of all our pets), and I hope you will have adopted another friend, as there are so many sweet ones just waiting for their special human.

We have decided not to adopt a new one just yet (we still have Bandit, and Ashes in our 1BR apt) but sooner or later I figure the temptation will overcome us…
Quasi, I donated to the cat shelter in Washtenaw County, MI (the shelter where Smokey & Bandit would have gone if I hadn’t adopted them) in Smokey’s memory, and my husband asked for a donation to NYC’s Urban Cat League instead of a Christmas gift. 
So sorry to hear about your loss.
My gray baby (still my baby, though she will be 6 this year- where does the time go?), Katya, will get extra loving and petting while she eats tonight.
