So a few months ago I had seen a post in the theatre for an audition to work for the Orlando Magic, they were looking for all sorts of entertainers - including improvisors. I made a note about it and sort of shrugged, not really planning to go but who knows - something might happen.
The day of said audition I had had a date with a girl and she bailed on me. So instead of staying home and pouting, I said “what the hell” and went out without much intention of actually getting hired - just sort of a shot in the dark.
Lo and behold, I got hired by the Orlando Magic to work on the “Blue Crew” which are the guys during the game who go out and launch t-shirts into the crowd and help get the crowd riled up. Cool job no?
Little did I know just how much fun it was! I mean sure, it’s a fun job, but seriously - I’m getting paid to do stuff that would get normal fans banned from the arena. I’m getting paid to shoot CO2 powered t-shirt shooters. I’m getting paid to rub elbows with the players and watch the game from the floor. I’m getting paid to make people laugh and smile.
Tonight the Magic pulled out a big win. Sure the Bulls were tired from last night, but we still rocked their socks off. And God was it fun.
I love adrenaline. I love rollercoasters and rock climbing and all that sort of stuff. But there is not much like standing on the floor of the arena amidst 17,000 cheering fans as they try to get me to launch a t-shirt into their section. Holy shit is that a rush.
So yes, I love my new part time gig!
