I really would appreciate an original Guinness draught system mounted in my kitchen. With a direct line to St. James’s Gate in Dublin. Is that doable for you?
Um, don’t get too excited yet, sweetie. I’m sitting here visiting other Message Boards, reading my mail, washing dishes, etc. while I wait for Straight Dope threads to load. 
And besides, they changed the Search function back to the way it was, didn’t they?
It’s still directly correlated to how many people are trying to get on at any given moment. Right now, it’s a “Back to work after the holiday” Friday morning, so they’re runnin’ slow.
I’m starting to notice a distinct roller-coaster effect, too, in the last few weeks. I’ll try to get in, it’ll be slow as molasses in February, so I’ll go away and come back later, and sometimes then it’ll be fast–for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then it’s back to creeping along. I think everybody else has the same idea, that lots of other people, on any given weekday morning, are trying to get in, and can’t, and go away and come back later. If you sneak in while everybody else is busy down at the copy machine, things load fast, but then when they all come back, it’s back to Snail City.
I came back here to this thread and it obligingly popped right up out of ATMB, but then when I previewed, I had time to go check out some other stuff online while I waited. Feast or famine.

Nope. We did add a couple more search parameters to the list, but it’s not back to the way it was, not at all.

'Fraid so. All the other factors – the number of people trying to access the system, traffic between your computer and the Reader server, hell, I dunno, the phase of the moon, maybe – all that still applies and so those problems are still with us.
Just the same, being able to access the board in daylight hours – which I could not do until we made the search engine changes – that’s continuing. So I have to believe it’s still a change for the better.
