I may be looking for a new job soon!

For the last two years I’ve enjoyed a FIFO (fly-in/fly-out) arrangement with my employer where I had two weeks of work at a remote but comfortable location (Broome) followed by two weeks of time off at a capital city of my choice (Adelaide.) Prior to this I was required to live permanently at the remote but comfortable location. The distance between the two places is about 2500 km or 1500 miles so the company has significant costs including airfares, allowances, and accommodation probably totaling around $30,000 - $40,000 per annum. There are only three employees doing what I’m doing, the rest live at the operational bases and are on a retention bonus scheme.

This was put in place at a time when there were few qualified pilots willing to work in such a remote place. Since then the GFC has hit, the pilot shortage has eased and the retention bonus scheme ends at the end of this year. As it is easier to recruit now the company is understandably evaluating whether it needs to continue with us “part-timers” or not. They are making a decision this week.

If they decide to end the FIFO then I gather the position will be made redundant at the end of the year and I’ll be offered a relocation back to an operational base, probably Broome. On the other hand the FIFO may continue for another year. It’s possible they may try and compromise with an extension of six months or something, I’m not sure.

The good thing is I won’t be out of a job, but I really don’t want to move back to Broome, my family have been moving every few years for the last decade and are a bit sick of it. Also we’ve bought a house in Adelaide and don’t want to have to sell or rent it for another year at least.

Something that will be giving the company pause is that a couple of the major airlines around here are on a recruiting drive that may last for at least another year. The airlines is the next logical step for us guys and all of us, First Officers to Captains, are very well placed to get into an airline if we want to. Already around 20% of our FOs have had interviews and been offered employment with an airline. The Captains (including me) stand to get a significant bonus at the end of the year but we don’t qualify if we’ve given notice, so none of the Captains will be making any moves until January 1st 2011.

If the company makes us FIFO chaps redundant and then get a swath of resignations on Jan 1st they’ll look pretty stupid. But then if they keep it going and there are few resignations they’re probably wasting money on an unnecessary scheme.

To complicate matters further, I’m in my mid thirties and if I’m going to fly for an airline (I don’t know that I even want to) I need to do it soon if I’m to make a decent career out of it. So there is a strong possibility that I will look for work elsewhere regardless of what the company’s decision is regarding my present position. There is also the fact that my wife doesn’t like me being away for two weeks at a time. It is no consolation to her that we spend more time together than many other families due to my solid two weeks of time off.

At the moment the family and I are in limbo. We’re waiting to hear from management and then we’ll be able to have a better idea of what we’ll be doing next year. We want to stay in Adelaide but there are few opportunities there and none pay as well as what we currently have. I like the work I’m doing at the moment, good people, good lifestyle, low stress, but I don’t want to be doing it forever.

Anyway, I’m in the process of getting my CV in order just in case I need it!

Wow.

I mean really wow.

You prefer Adelaide to Broome?
(Just kidding- you have decisions to make but it doesn’t seem as though you can make a “wrong” decision).

Broome is a lovely place to visit.

Really dumb question, but let me first frame what I think you do…

You live in Broome for 2 weeks, then you fly to Adelaide for 2 weeks and are a pilot.

Your company is about to tank your position [perhaps] because they are paying out the arse for housing, and I guess they are adding in a plane ticket though you are essentially deadheading to get to Adelaide.

You do not want to move to Adelaide, but if you have to leave the airline you may be forced to move anyway, if there are not any pilot positions in Broome. [this is mildly important later]

So, why not negotiate to be left in Broome on the 2 week/2 week schedule, but buy a small plane capable of flying between Broome and Adelaide, and fly your own commute, and rent a room in someones house [or a granny flat, whatever the term for it is down there, or club up with a couple other pilots in the same position and split the cost of the house/flat that way.] and release the company from paying for your Adelaide living costs. Not sure what the cost of living is in Adelaide, but there are ways to live on the cheap everywhere if you really want to.

Well, Broome to Adelaide is just short of 3,000 km. A small plane flying that far?

Also, I think Richard does want to live in Adelaide rather than Broome. I may have that wrong though.

Other way around, I live in Adelaide and commute to Broome.

We aren’t an airline and they have to pay for a ticket for me like any other passenger.

I have thought about something like this but with buying air tickets instead of an aeroplane. It’s 1500 miles from Adelaide to Broome, small planes can’t do it in one hop and it would be orders of magnitude more expensive than an air ticket. housing in Broome is very expensive, it’s one of the reasons I left in the first place. It’s not really a viable option.

Just to be clear, my job is not under threat, they may make the position I have redundant but they are contractually obliged to offer me a position at another base, that base would probably be Broome because that’s the one they traditionally have difficulty staffing. We just don’t really want to move back here. (I’m in Broome at the moment so Broome is “here” and Adelaide is “there”.)

Well, I guess my answer is redundant.

I can offer you the opportunity to give another answer but it would have to be in another, less appealing thread.

Edit: I’m not complaining at all by the way, we’ve got some interesting times ahead of us and it’s a little stressful not knowing, but whatever happens we’re ok. Better than being stuck in a mine for 4 months with 32 other blokes anyway.

Nah- I’m sulking now. I am off to crush Montezuema in Civilization.

If the AI hands me my arse on a platter (as is usual) I will be back. Save a place for me.

True, one’s position would have to be pretty damned abyssmal to make being stuck in a mine for 4 months an improvement :stuck_out_tongue:

Honestly, families are pretty flexible if the internal relationships are good. I got moved around a fair amount when I was pretty young, and then shifted schools a lot, and I survived =) And had been pretty nomadic for about 10 years as an adult.

As a mild hijack, I think that Australia and the US are pretty similar in viewpoint as we are both countries with large distances to cover between cities and territories/states. I have some european friends who are horrified at the thought of a 10 km commute, and in the US it is an unusual job to be within 10 km of the home. Chris is horrified at the thought that mrAru and I will drive from Hartford CT to Rochester NY every month to visit my mom…

Actually one of the few things I dislike about FIFO is that it has put a strain on our relationship. Because I spend very little time at home it doesn’t really feel like my home and sometimes it feels like the rules with the kids are always changing so when I tell one of the girls off for something I find out that they’re allowed to do that now or I let them do something they’re not supposed to do. My wife doesn’t do it on purpose, it’s just a side affect of not being there enough.

The kids are highly adaptable, they don’t seem to care what we do.

Companies are run by politican-wanna-be’s, the old days of Sam Walton are probably long gone, (Walmart creator).
My boss now an exception, but say you crash a plane…someone hurt…

Yes, that would go down well ;).

Well, they have decided. I received the letter via email tonight. FIFO will continue to the end of 2011 at least but they reserve the right to discontinue it at any time if they deem it necessary.

Good news! That gives you at least a year.
