They’re new, and we’ve not even met. But there were fireworks earlier tonight, and I couldn’t figure out why. And I’ve come to find out that last night was the end of Eid al-Adha, and that Muslims often celebrate the end with fireworks.
And let’s just say my town is not the type of place where you’d expect this sort of diversity.
Yes…their holidays and religious rites are different …but quite interesting…my 18 year old is dating a muslim young man and we’ve had a lot of discussions about these things with him…and have learned a lot of things I never knew about Islam…some quite interesting…mostly it is just familial customs.
Your post was quite … tantalizing. But (IMHO) pointedly noncommittal. Do say more about the “interesting” parts, please. Interesting in a way that makes you glad she’s dating this guy? Enquiring minds want to know.
I can relate. Our rural neighborhood is painfully white. If someone “different” moved in I’d be equally happy to see some diversity and worried about what some yahoos would probably do.
My block consists of Euro-Americans, Latin-Americans (is that the right term?), African-Americans, and one Indian family. The Indians are the only ones that feel like diversity to me. The others are pretty standard in this area.
I wish there were some Muslims. They sound like fun.
When I first met my new neighbors, I figured they were probably Muslim, given their names. Turns out the are Christian Arabs. Really, really, REALLY Christian. They must have about 15 statues of various Christian saints in their yard. Fortunately we have some mature landscaping between our houses.
Yeah I introduce myself to new neighbors all the time . I am Jewish and when my parents were one of first Jewish family to move into their new neighborhood people were all freaked out until they got know my parents and realize their fears was for no reason .
