I met Phil Keoghan tonight

He was here in town for a combined book signing (No Opportunity Wasted) and auditions for the TV reality show of the same name.

He looks exactly like he does on TV…well, maybe a little taller than I thought he was. He was very nice. He took the time not only to sign books but really talk to people and take pictures with them. Luckily, I had my digital camera with me, and got a picture of myself taken with him.

Kudos to the staff at Chapters. They did an excellent job of organization.

You missed the part that he is every damn bit as good looking in person as he is on t.v.! Many pictures were taken; some pictures were e-mailed.

If other Canadopers are interested he is going to be in Calgary tomorrow and Vancouver on Thursday.

I heard him on Q on CBC the other day (thank you Sirius) and he’s charming! He also used to live in Guelph, poor fella.

What was he doing in Guelph??

One of the things I’ve liked about Phil Keoghan is that he seems to really take time to talk and meet with fans. I know he’s shown up a couple of years at the TARCon in NY city after the final episode of The Amazing Race. Seems like an all around nice guy. Jelouse that you got to meet him.

I’m thinking of heading to Chapters soon as I get off of work. I figure I’ll get there about 5:30ish, and he’s supposed to be there at 7.

His dad is (or was, I don’t know if he’s still alive) a scientist, and at the university there in some sort of official capacity.

Good plan. I was in line around 5:40, and it was 7 before I actually made it up to him.

If you’re buying a book, make sure you grab it as soon as you get there. The only glitch at Chapters was that they ran out of books. The shipment they were expecting yesterday didn’t make it.

Will do!

Too bad I forgot until I got to work. Otherwise I’d have brought my camera with me (and a camera phone isn’t the greatest).

Yay! Got to meet him!

Got a book signed for me and my Mom, and I’m thinking of applying for the show (what the hell, right?).

I was a little embarassed though. Called up Mom who brought Velociraptor to meet me there and we hung out in line/store… and on the home stretch of the line Velociraptor decided the BEST place to check out would be the video cameras set up to tape your tape for NOW.

Right behind Phil. :smack:

So I’m ducking along and across the line, trying to snatch a wiggly 3 y/o and am just a few feet away from Phil as I’m hissing his (Velociraptor’s) name and ‘get back here!’

When we got to the front though, Phil was amused and even signed Velociraptor’s new book (he wanted to be just like Mommy and Grandma), so now we have a Curious George treasury signed by Phil.

I thought he was very personable, Flutterby, so your story doesn’t surprise me. How logn was the line there?

Oh, and you didn’t happen to ask/hear about whether there will be another season of Amazing Race did you? I intended to ask, and then forgot.

We were there for a total of two hours (got there about 5:45 and left at about 7:45), and from what I’ve read on the Facebook for NOW he was there until everyone got their books signed.

No, I didn’t think to ask. I’m actually really shy at the most inopportune times, so mostly I stood there grinning like a fool while my Mom did the talking. Exactly what I did when we stood in line to see Stewart McLean. :smack:

Phil used to be one of the hosts of a show in New Zealand called Spot On which was an institution while I was growing up. It was a show where you’d send in a letter saying “I want to learn more about this subject” and they’d go off and investigate.

So subjects like motor racing, and hanggliding, and firefighting, and abseiling, and sometimes silly comedic stuff too, would be all get shown. It was excellent, and I recognise the same adventurous Phil from Spot On is still there in his more recent ventures, even if he has lost his Kiwi accent for the most part.

I saw him interviewed and he said there would be a new season ( I think he said they’re working on it now).

Thanks, Quiddity Glomfuster. That’s good to know. I hadn’t heard anything about the next one, and was getting a bit anxious.

Flutterby**, I’ve never met him, but have been to Vinyl Cafe concerts a couple of times when they have the Christmas tour. They’re always a lot of fun, especially with the Christmas Dave and Morley stories, though I don’t think any of them will ever quite top Dave cooking the turkey.

Lucky you, meeting Phil! And I did read earlier today that apparently TAR 12 has been greenlighted for a “midseason” show, which could mean anything from a scheduled start in January to a fill-in replacement for something else that tanks. Like the piece of crap that they’re replacing Jericho with. grumble grumble

But anyway, Phil is surprisingly thin in person, isn’t he? I only got to stand next to him for about 5 seconds for a photo a few TARcons ago, but it was enough to be surprised that he looks even finer in person than on TV!

Mid-season?? That sounds alarmingly unplanned.

You’d think CBS could just show one fewer CSI series, and who’d know the difference?

Several people commented that he looked much younger in person. He is fine though. That’s why I didn’t say much, I was trying to contain the drool.

He was just as great as Phil, said hi to Velociraptor and stayed long so we all could get our books signed (I was in that line for 2 hours also). One of these times I’ll have to go see him on tour.
