Amazing Race 7/31 (spoilers)

I have only one thing to say:

Gach moving!

Don’t these people KNOW that in Korea, you don’t eat ANYTHING unless you have the right to choose what it is you’re going to eat? Papa Tiger was having a wonderful time watching them suffer, having spent quite a bit of time in Seoul himself.

I expected a non-elimination round, so wasn’t all that surprised.

And Phil’s wardrobe person really, REALLY needs to get a new pair of eyeballs – geesh, that sweater with that coat? Young Tiger actually cried out in pain when Phil first appeared in that (?) delightful combo!

Having lived in Seoul for several years, I was giggling as I watched the Gay Guys eat san nakji. Usually, raw, chopped octopus is consumed with chili sauce and lots of soju; downing it with water and no seasoning --bleah. I was also enjoying the teams’ struggles to find English-speaking cabbies. The mobom cabs (black and tan color) are three times the price of regular cabs, and the drivers are supposed to be able to speak English.

I could tell that the host mispronounced the name of Kyongbok Palace by sightreading the clumsy Minstry of Education transliteration instead of checking how it’s actually pronounced in Korean.

And that challenge to swim under the ice–criminy! I’m amazed none of the swimmers suffered hypothermia.

I was totally a Clowns fan until this episode… now I’m equally rooting for Reichen and Chip. Of the couples I’ve seen on this show, theirs is the relationship I most like. Reichen fussing over Chip after he emerged from the ice swim? Chip carefully setting up octopus shooters for Reichen? Could they be any sweeter together?

I admit to being distracted by the size of Chip’s package as he climbed out of the water. And that was with shrinkage, people!

Interesting. On another board where there’s a large obsessive contingent of fans for this show, everyone is commenting on Chip’s lack of shrinkage.

Papa Tiger was amazed that nobody thought to do what he says is required in Seoul since so few cabbies speak English – have someone at a hotel (or the airport) who’s bilingual write down, in Korean, their destination so they could just give it to the cabbie. It would sure have saved a lot of time down the road, seems to me.

I loved the way ClownJon broke those boards. Looks like he’s had some experience? He sure seemed to know what he was doing.

Not as exciting as last week, but still enjoyable. I guess my mind’s not as far in the gutter as you people - I didn’t notice Chip’s package, but that’s probably because I was too busy admiring his tattoo. I was also very impressed with how well Chip and Reichen handled the moving octopus. There is no way I would ever even attempt that, and I probably would’ve vomited just at the sight of a plate full of wriggling tentacles.

I was happy to see the whole getting lost in the DMZ thing wasn’t anywhere near as big a deal as the previews made it look. But I have to wonder now, since I haven’t really been keeping track - have there been any episodes where David and Jeff haven’t gotten lost at least once? It’s getting ridiculous.

I hate to say it, but Jon and Kelly are really growing on me. I even felt sorry for her when they showed her hand after breaking the boards. At this point I can’t decide if I want to see them or David and Jeff eliminated next. Of course, as long as either the Clowns or Chip and Reichen win, I’ll be happy.

And yes, Phil needs a new wardrobe ASAP. Either the sweater or the jacket might have been fine on its own, but together? I think that’s the real reason behind North Korea’s saber-rattling a few months ago. They spotted Phil near the border in that outfit, and wanted to do whatever it took to get it away from them.

Whew! I was really worried for the clowns there. And I can’t believe the Clowns and the D&J lost their hour lead. That sucked.

R&C - maybe its cuz I’m a guy - but I really don’t find them cute. I’m sure Chip can dress himself. They’re last on my list for winning right now.

I’ve done two polar dips…I went numb all over when I went in and could barley move my legs, so they did a good job. Something like they did won’t give you hypothermia, if you get warmed up right away.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit I noticed that, too. :o

And that octopus… yuck. That can’t be anything like raw oysters, like Chip was saying to pretend. I love oysters, but I’d never be able to get wriggling octopus down. Gah. Where’s that barfing smilie?

And I still think Kelly’s a huge bitch. Jon was trying to encourage her while she was breaking the boards, and she kept turning around and telling him to shut up or shut his pie hole. In a really nasty way. It almost borders on verbal abuse. She’s just mean. I hate that they’ve made it this far.

I, too, expected a non-elimination round last night so, for the first time, I wasn’t particularly disappointed.
And I didn’t notice Chip’s package either! DOH!
Bring on the next episode! That will separate the Men from the Boys! (And maybe Kelly, too! I still can’t stand her!)
And I still don’t know The Goats’ names. How sad is that?

Regarding R&C: Chip might have the package but Reichen has the better bod. Check out the June issue of Instinct which has Reichen as the shirtless cover boy–yum!

I thought that was a mighty fine episode.

Frankly, I’m gonna be sad to see any of these teams go next week. Even Kelly and Jon. Without them, everything’s going to be all nicey-nice.

David or Jeff (no clue which is which) - “I hope the Korean delicacy is pizza and Budweiser.” Hee hee. Too funny.

I don’t actively hate any of the teams. So, if any win, I am not disappointed. I’d like the 3 all-male teams to advance simply because Kelly and Jon are the most likely to be pointlessly angry. I think the frozen river swim was probably the challenge most likely to lead to contestant death. They usually have major backup systems to keep a person from falling to their death, but underwater in a frozen river is just a little tougher to be saved in.

Even as much as I despise Kelly, when her hand first hit the boards and stopped. Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch - that just hurt so bad! I hope she didn’t break anything.

I’ve hated Jon & Kelly all season, but I have to admit they’re starting to grow on me. I’m still routing for the clowns, though. I was really worried when it looked like Dave&Jeff grabbed the taxi and stranded the clowns at the river – good sportsmanship for the goats to wait for them; it could have ended up causing them to be eliminated.

I thought for sure Chip (or Reichen?) was going to hurl the tentacles. Korean? It looked like a Klingon delicacy! I’m surprised they were able to run to the mat after that meal.

One more thing – gotta love Jon the Clown (or was it Al?) at the airport, trying to get a standby ticket with the universal sign language of raised eyebrows and two thumbs up. Ha!

My preferences to win are:
– Clowns
– Jon/Kelly
– Dave/Jeff
– Chip/Reichen

OK, I really enjoyed this episode.

I was very impressed that C & R managed to down all the moving bits - I couldn’t have done it.

I admit to noticing the package…

I realized, after the episode was over, that C & R have grown on me but, amazingly enough, so have John and Kelly. Yes, she bitches at him a lot, and so does he - but you know, I think that’s just how they de-stress and let off steam. If you notice, in the voice overs, they have nothing but wonderful things to say about each other (I’m thinking of John talking about how proud he was of Kelly while she was trying to break boards). I think she’s just a perfectionist and gets worried and stressed very easily. She did look close to tears after failing to break the boards the first time - and that’s when she told him to shut his pie hole. And don’t forget, once she succeeded, she threw her arms around him (and vice versa). The verbal running-of-the-mouth is just how she relieves stress - he obviously isn’t bothered by it and knows she doesn’t really mean it. Yep, they are definitely growing on me.

I still like the clowns, too. At this point, I guess I’m hoping that Dave/Jeff are eliminated next week as they’re the only ones I don’t have any feelings about at all.

During one of the swims (I think it was the Goat Swim) I saw a SCUBA diver at the left side of the screen. My guess is that this was a safety person who was there to save a contestant who needed to be saved. Oy! Think of the liability if there was no safety net in place!

Yes, I saw the scuba diver, too, as well as the guide ropes. There were probably several divers – just think of the poor slob who was under there running the camera! The camera and sound guys should be nominated for the Unsung Hero award for going through everything the contestants are without ever getting on camera!

Absolutely. I suppose, though, when you’re physically and mentally run down the old brain just sort of shuts off. I was getting concerned for ClownJon in the cab and I think at the airport. He was looking awfully fatigued and had a blank stare on his face. The ClownDance on the ice made me happy. I still think they deserve to win the most out of all the teams left. They work well together, they respect each other, they respect other teams (which is IMO why David and Jeff actually waited for them after the ice swim), and have genuine enthusiasm about completing each task.

Reichen and Chip cannot pick a cab driver to save their lives. I like to see Reichen pout and moan whenever something goes slightly awry. As much as I don’t like them, I agree with Amanita that they display some genuine affection, caring, and concern for one another. They are the polar opposite of Kelly and Jon.

Phil’s wardrobe was atrocious. Why couldn’t they bring back the shearling coat he wore in the beginning.

Mama Tiger, you bring up a subject I’ve been interested in for a while now. I would love to know more about the logistics and problems involved in simply filming this show.

Obviously the teams can’t make sure there’s room on the planes for the camera crew, so I guess the show has people stationed at the destination airports. They would also need camera people who are in pretty good shape who can keep up with the teams. And what if a cameraperson gets seperated.

Then there’s the whole issue of safety. Do they have doctors at the pit-stops. And what about all the legal messes from various countries and the process of selecting teams?

Somebody should make a documentary about the making of The Amazing Race. I’d watch.

So Reichen and Chip think it’s alright to eat some live Octopus. I think they might get a vvisit from some of “associates” if ya know what I mean.

ANd if anybody asks you ain’t heard nuthin’!

Concerning the “package”… Hubby never actually sits down and watches the show with me; he’s always walking through the room from other TV to computer and back. Well, he walks into the room right as the “package” goes onscreen. “Well, he’s not worried about shrinkage.”

and Gangster Octopus, I’m loving your attitude!
