I was watching some news show and they were playing some clips from Trump’s campaign rallies, and I realized that we haven’t seen this version of Trump in a while. He was actually pretty funny and entertaining at the rallies: the Marco Rubio water drinking imitation, the Ben Carson stabbing re-enactment, “that face!”, “my African-American over there!”, “get 'em out of here!”, etc. Now I realize he could be incredibly offensive, but he was a great showman. Now, not so much. I think this job is putting a lot of stress on him, he doesn’t seem happy. He now only uses his sullen, depressed, monotone voice that I first remember hearing in the debates with Clinton.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in disbelief he actually won and it’s way worse than I imagined. Like I said on election night, I think his election proves the many-worlds theory of quantum mechanics, and the universe I’m conscious in is one of those crazy, outlandish ones some professor in a sane universe uses as an example… “there is some universe, just like ours, but Donald Trump is president!”. We are in a bizarro world.
I’m completely surrounded by Trump supporters where I work, and I mentioned to one on how he isn’t the same as he was on the campaign and gave examples, and I actually think it made a slight change in his perspective of Trump. He didn’t have to defend him to me, and actually agreed that he has changed and he missed the campaign Trump too. In other words, I’m coming to the realization the only way to reach Trump’s core supporters is to talk to them in a way where they don’t immediately get defensive. Their vote is part of their identity, and by extension, criticising the person they voted for is equal to criticising them, so it’s no mystery why we see such support among his voters.
