As a crossing guard, I get ‘assigned’ a particular corner. Now, in the intrest of making a good impression to the Sheriff’s department school safety division (my employers) I demonstrated my ability to read a map  Yes, I was able to rub two brain cells vigorously to find my way to an intersection I had previously never heard before, on one hour’s notice. They had told me that when starting out, I would get assigned many different places, since I was low on the totem pole I would be used to cover corners whose regular guards were sick/on vacation. They told me after a while, they would ‘establish’ a corner for me, near my home.
The corner they semi permanently assigned me to was great. It was a busy street, but the other guard working there was a friendly old guy with a great sense of humor and well-liked around kids. There was an ice cream truck driver of some middle eastern persuasion who would park nearby, sometimes involved in verbal battles (in some middle eastern language I guess) with a ‘rival’ ice cream truck driver over 'turf. The driver was a great guy also- as a reward for helping catch some kids who shoplifted him, he hooked me up with FREE ice cream! So when I was out there on broiling 100 degree weather, this guy would give me a bottle of water or a choco taco or something for my trouble!
It was kind of a mutually beneficial arrangement- I got free ice cream, he got an intersection where two people were pretty much funneling kids straight towards his truck.
This school year, my dispatcher had me go to another corner. My old corner was super close to my house (5 minutes away). The new place is farther, and I have less time to go to school after my morning shift While the new corner isn’t TERRIBLE per se, I really miss the old one since I worked there for 2 years
