Lynette is scum. Didn’t she make Tom sell his beloved boat when they were short of money? Then Tom explains how he wore cheap suits when he was working, just to save money. But that’s not good enough for Lynette. If she’s going to go to work, she needs $900 suits, and is willing to spend God knows how much on golf clubs to get Tom to sign off on it.
Scum. Total scum. Who cares about the kids tuition? Who cares about the dentist bills? If Lynette wants $900 suits, Lynette gets $900 suits, even is she has to cash in the kids’ college funds to do it. You can bet when they need cash, Tom’s clubs will be the first thing to go, not Lynette’s multi-thousand dollar wardrobe.
Look, I will admit Lynette has not been a saint. She let her gym think one of the P-twins had cancer so she could get into a yoga class. She’s terrible on discipline, thinking threatening the childen with a spanking and not following through is effective. She’s sabotaged her husband’s career. But I do not see an evil streak in her that you guys do. (I think Gabby is more conniving.) And I think her buying her husband a set of clubs was a sweet gesture. Yes, she gets to keep the suits. But she needed new clothes to keep up with her job, and I don’t fault her for that. And it looks like she has a fairly decent job, so I don’t think money will be paycheck to paycheck for them. The kids will go to college and get braces, never fear.
I don’t fault Lynette for needing clothes appropriate to her job. Of course if she hasn’t bought a new suit for however many years she’ll need to buy some new ones and of course she needs to buy clothes of a certain quality to make presentations. She doesn’t need a $900 suit. No one needs a $900 suit. She knows she doesn’t need a $900 suit, which is why she agreed to return it. When she couldn’t return it because the tag was torn off, rather than simply explain that she couldn’t return it and why (and return all the other expensive suits, which IIRC were still in the trunk under the clubs), she buys Tom off with the clubs. I seriously don’t get how you can see such a blatant act of manipulation as “sweet.”
Oh, and another thing, sort of related but kind of off-topic. That whole “Parker needs a math tutor” business. First off, isn’t he in kindergarten? Do kindergarteners really need tutors? Even if they did, Parker’s been in school for, like, a month or less. How far behind in math could he be already? And if he is behind in math, when exactly is Lynette going to find time with her 10-12 hour days to tutor him? Dopey.
I didn’t get the manipulation vibe, that’s all, like when she bought the mouse. I may be hopelessly naive, or I may be the breadwinner of our family, a family with a stay at home dad and two teenaged kids in private school. As for $900 suits, I don’t know the level of her job. It may be appropriate. The clients were wearing Armani, etc, so it may not be out of line to purchase a higher-end suit.
Oh, who the hell knows. Gabby isn’t showing her pregnancy, elfkin already noted baby Penny’s non-growth, and I would think the teenagers would be one year ahead in school by now. I think Desperate Housewives exists in some sort of time-space continuum, where a month in real life equals only a day on Wisteria Lane.
I think Tom said that Parker might need, oh, say, a math tutor someday. I think he wanted her to save up for future expenses. And I’m sure in her neighborhood she could find upscale resale and get the suits for a fraction of the price.
The guy who was playing Caleb has just been fired for “improper conduct.” But I suppose no one will notice unless we see more of his face this coming week. They’re bringing in a replacement.
