I need a new home page

I’ve used USA Today for my home page for years. They’ve recently rolled out a new design and I hate it so I’m shopping for a replacement.

Requirements: The site should offer an organized and uncluttered glimpse of the latest headlines. An easy to read indication of the current Dow Jones would be nice. A quick, one-click to see the latest sports scores and upcoming schedules is also a plus.

That’s about it. Mostly I just want to see what’s happening in the world in a clean, organized layout.

Any recommendations?
mmm

ETA: No slideshows, dancing graphics, or movement of any kind on the main page.

Have you tried this one?

Not really seeing the latest headlines or Dow Jones there…

I’ve found that for many websites that are unbearable, you just need to turn JavaScript off for them. This can be done easily in Chrome, or using a plugin in Firefox. Something to consider when checking out people’s suggestions.

What about just iGoogle or Yahoo? You can add or subtract components to personalize it. I know for a fact the iGoogle has various stock market apps.

I was just looking at igoogle and it says it’s going away next year.

Another vote for Yahoo!, either the vanilla version or “My Yahoo”.

It might be worth your time to go through all the options on “My Yahoo”. There might be things that you didn’t know you wanted until you saw that they are available.

Hadn’t thought of Yahoo, that’s worth considering.

I’ve used igoogle for a long time and I’m really bummed to be loosing it. I could stand a few recommendations for a replacement.

Not as good as iGoogle, but not bad.

I’ve been using My Yahoo for years and years. Very customizable and they rarely change it up on you.

I set mine to a random wikipedia page, under the theory that it could expose me to bits of knowledge I’d never think to know. It’s a lot of fun.

I enjoy the msnbc some pictures and the scroll down gives local and national news with the weather two clicks to sports (all kinds ) local weather and even the stocks.

Free and fully customizable.

For a while I used aljazeera.com, since it was a way of getting the news headlines without having as much UK bias and without all the pointless headlines that don’t actually tell you anything. But it probably doesn’t have the sport scores and other stuff local to where you are that you actually do want.

I don’t have it set as my homepage, but I often visit newsmap for a quick review of what’s going on in the world.

I also use Protopage. (Someone here recommended it ages ago.) I have information organized across 6 or 7 tabs.

I like that you have full control over it and can make it as cluttered or uncluttered as you like.

The free version has ads that I don’t see because of AdBlock, but when I’ve seen them because I was on someone else’s computer, they haven’t seemed very intrusive.

You can also pay a small fee to use the ad-free version.

Here you go!

Thanks for the responses; Protopage seems like it might work for me.

And I just discovered something: When I have more than one tab open, and click to save that as my home page, every tab opens when I re-start Firefox. This might be useful for my purposes. Does the rest of the world know about this feature??
mmm

I recommended Protopage ages ago. I still use the free version, but if I scroll down just a bit, the ads at the top of the page are hidden. No prob.

There is a library of widgets… not all that many, but some are useful. I have photos of my dogs and cats in one. Mostly what I have is tons of RSS headline feeds from about a dozen publications… each one has about 15 headlines. When you hover, you get the first few lines of the story.

I have all of my regular stops on the web, the Dope, my webmail, college-email login page, bank links, netflix, rotten tomatoes, Starbucks (to reload my card).

Also I change the colors to match the background of whatever wallpaper I’m currently using.

I used to use it until I got an Android phone and couldn’t get the calendar to work with Google correctly.

I love My Yahoo. Flexible and easy to configure. I was really pissed about Google IG closing down; I’m gonna see if I can’t get Yahoo to work better on my cell phone and go back to it.
