I need a new job

:frowning:

We sell to stores that sell to contractors. Because of the crappy-ass economy, the stores don’t want to buy. Which means we have almost no money coming in. My last two paychecks were late and the latest one bounced. Soooo… I need to look for a new job.

But my portfolio is in terrible shape and I’ve already signed up for daytime classes next semester. So first I have to fix up my portfolio (which mostly means remaking things that got lost when my computer crashed a few years ago). And I have to figure out my salary requirements.

I feel bad about abandoning my co-workers. I don’t think there’s anyway they’re going to be able to find a halfway decent graphic designer who will want to work here. On the other hand, I had already made kick-ass instructions for my replacement. I’ve told my boss I won’t put notice in right away. There’s no point in me looking for a graphics job with no portfolio. And at this point in time, it’s basically mandatory to have it online, right? So that means I need to make a website too.

I’m wondering if I can make enough money doing data entry. I enjoy data entry and I’m good at it. I actually enjoy being a faceless drone in a company. I do well with more structure (I always forget to take my breaks here) and I can let my mind wander while my fingers fly.

So anybody near the border of Ventura & LA counties need a low-level graphic designer? Or a damn-good data entry clerk?

My husband used to work at that (unnamed but you know who I mean) big biotech in Thousand Oaks. I know they laid off a pile of people a year or so ago, but my husband has a friend who still works there and who says that the place is quietly starting to hire and grow again. I guess they just wanted to trim a lot of deadwood. I don’t know if they have openings for people of your experience, but I thought I’d point it out.

Thanks. I’ve got ideas where to apply - there’s a few temp agencies I’ve had good luck with and the last place I did data entry for. If I can afford it, I might just go to school full-time. (I’m already signed up for three-quarters time. I might be able to find another class.) Unfortunately, I can’t move into the dorms or anything - I have two cats.

My superior told me the boss asked her to ask me if there was ANYTHING he could do to make me reconsider. It’s nice to be wanted, but I don’t want to be the last rat off a sinking ship (not that I said that.)

I just did up my expenses for this year. I’ve been spending more than I make, by about $400 a month.  It’s good thing I have student loans! (note to self: stop buying so much!)
