I need a new sudoku game

I just upgraded my phone. And my old sudoku game doesn’t work any more. So I’m looking for a new one.

I want:

  • A simple interface
  • Moderately hard puzzles
  • A way to mark a cell as possible (it impossible) for a number, as well as to enter the number
  • No ads

I’m willing to pay, and I’m willing to play an ad-supported version to test it, and then upgrade to a paid ad-free version. But i really want a good version. There’s are a lot of crappy ones out there.

Any recommendations?

It’s a small bonus if the app includes similar games, so long as that doesn’t make it too complex to start a sudoku game. I often play one game of sudoku to unwind right before bed, and don’t want to deal with annoyances in this game.

I also lost my Carcasson game and my “beats per minute” counter, is anyone has recommendations for versions of those.

The NYT Games site has several good games, including Sudoku and the vaunted crossword. They have a pretty clean app that’s easy to use. They usually have a promo going that lets you try it for $4/mo.

I don’t want one a day, i want to just open the app and play sudoku when i feel like it. And $4/month is really pricy for a phone game.

Also, i suck at crossword puzzles, so they aren’t fun for me. :slightly_frowning_face:

Genina’s Sudoku meets the qualifications. The base game does have a banner ad at the top, but it can be easily ignored. It has a top-10 scoreboard for the four difficulty levels. And you can upgrade to the paid version if the ads make you crazy, but they don’t bother me because the banner ad is all there is. No ads between games or moves.

Thanks. The interface is very different from my last app, but I think i can get used to it. And you’re right, the ads are fairly unobtrusive, and $2.50 for an ad-free version is very reasonable.

FYI, you can often get the all-access subscription to the NYTimes (digital news, recipes, games, etc) for that $4/month. Calling and asking for it is often all it takes. I did it last year and again in February of this year.

They have many games you might enjoy, not all of them are one per day.

Simon Tatham’s Portable Puzzle Collection has a sudoku puzzle and MANY other games. Their sudoku puzzle is called “Solo”. I believe it’s free.

It does, but it has a horrible interface. I like some of the other games in that package, though, and second your recommendation of it in general.

I like “Classic Sudoku” by Cracking the Cryptic. The interface has a lot of options but I find the cleanest way to use it is to leave it in answer mode. When you select two or more cells (drag your finger) and enter a number in answer mode they appear as candidates. If you only have one cell selected then the number is entered as an answer.

You don’t say what phone you have.

Ah, good point. I have an android. (Pixel 9)
