Here is my predicament: My husband is Romanian, my husband’s family is in Romania. My in-laws (whom I have yet to meet) do not speak any English. Non. Zip. Nadda. So it’s up to me to learn Romanian. My husband doesn’t have the time to teach me (he works 2 jobs) so I am searching for some brave souls that are willing to embark on this with me.
So who’s game? Come on, come on? It’s a romance language, you know, like French, Spanish, so it can’t be that hard can it?
Any takers?
Please?
liirogue, do you have a textbook or audio tapes to work from? I’ve always been curious about Romanian. I was a French major in college, and I’ve studied some Spanish and Italian and German. I’ve always been a little curious about Romanian…
More of an idea really: could you get your husband to attach post-it notes to everything in your home, but marked in Romanian? That’s one way to learn some vocab…
There are some sites on the Net that we could use, and perhaps we could even get some Romanians to help us along the way. I was thinking if more than one person was interested, I could set up a mailing list sort of ling, and we could all communicate through that.
Thanks for the suggestion Carodin! Unfortunately, we still live with my mom (she won’t let us move out until I finish college) and we have a bunch of animals, and I don’t think the notes would stay where they were supposed to!
You accidentally* wrote a letter in Romanian rather than Romani? Do you actually know both languages so well that you forgot which one you were using?
One of the (many) regrets in my life is having never learned a second language; I took courses Latin in high school and German in college and remember just enough about both that I can puzzle them out with a dictionary.
And just to continue this hijack, is there an online guide to Romani you can recommend?
Unfortunately I do not know both languages very well at all. It was one of those embarrassing cultural mistakes one makes only once. You see, when looking for an online dictionary it brought up both Romanian and Romani. Because they look similar (to an untrained eye) I chose the dictionary with the most information - Romanian.
It was no wonder Kal couldn’t understand it :smack:
Do you know of many Romanians on the board liirogue? Or are you looking for a few people to just learn with? If you are looking to just pick up some basic vocabulary and sentence structure I’d be willing to give it a try.
LurkMeister, either Kal or I will mail you later with a few links for you to check out.
I am just looking for a few people to learn it with. However, if there did happen to be some Romanians (which there must be at least one around here…) that wanted to tutor us, I’d be more than happy!
You’d be more likely to find them with a subject title which mentions Romania or the Romanian language. Even though the double-entendre of your title is amusing, it’s probably not the best way to find the specific subset of the board’s members you’re looking for.
I’d be thrilled to learn a bit of Romanian, too. I met some Romanian people in Tokyo a few weeks ago, and would love to be able to surprise them with some of their own language.
OK, well then shoot!
What do you want to learn today?
I’ll translate it for you and you’ll see the spelling so you can write your friends. Romanian it’s very easy to speak; it’s a phonetic language.
Unfortunately, my schedule has changed and I don’t have the time to dedicate to it at the moment… however, I will probably begin my quest again soon. Thank you for your offer and I will keep you in mind!
