It’s meant to be used to turn a long strand of beads into a twisted double strand, but if it was hang on a chain as-is, you can open it, slip your ring onto it, and then secure it shut.
If it’s a flexible chain, you could loop it through and over the ring, basically tying it on.
The chain doesn’t have to be very long, just enough ‘give’ to make a loop, pass that through the centre of the ring and then slip the ring through the centre of the loop. The chain should tighten snugly around the thinest part of the ring (opposite the stone) and the loop will be under the two main strands. The weight of the stone (even if tiny) and fitting should keep the knot tight until you lift the ring and ease the loop back over the sides and through the centre to release it.
I’m not sure if that makes sense - let me know if you want pictures. I keep a ring my daughter gave me this way (nickel allergy, can’t wear it properly)
Not if the bar is long enough. I’m thinking between an inch and two inches. The ring would not be able to fall off of it unless you stuffed it through with some of the chain. If you look at my illustration you’ll see that there’s no way that ring could fall off–it wouldn’t fit over the bar.
Yeah that is what I meant when I said “I realize I could always do the put the chain through the ring, then around the ring thing… but that would require a very thin and flexible chain and I’d worry that it would break…” and that’s what I’ve done a few times, but I get nervous about it because the chain is soooo thin.
I’m liking some of the clasps you guys have shown me. A few of them don’t look very secure to me (a lobster-claw style seems more secure to me than some of the other ones I’ve seen). I don’t want a clasp that you pull on to open.
A neat idea, but I think that would be too much fiddling with clasps. I am hoping for something that can be done quickly and often, and without a mirror. For example, the kind of thing I could pop my ring onto really quickly while I wash my hands with some nasty solvent, then put the ring right back on. [I know one girl who lost her ring on the floor and another who lost one down the drain so I’m not eager to just set the ring down on the side of the sink.]
Yeah if I can’t find a better solution I may have to buy a thicker flexible chain. I just don’t want to be buying stuff right and left before I have settled on what I want. This chain is the only one I have at the moment. It’s really, really tiny.
Even so, one day, you’ll be reclining and the bar will drop into a fold in your clothes, or some other convenient crevice, turn in line with the chain and the ring - through more chance jiggery pokery that made it ride up the chain - will seize its chance to slip off and escape.
I doubt it. I only plan on having it on the chain when I’m actively doing something with my hands that would harm my ring, like using solvents or tools or things, or washing my hands. Not the sort of thing I’m likely to do while reclining, etc.
A leather thong would be cheaper yet. In the meantime, if you have thick cotton (like tatting cotton) or a fine string, you can make a temporary holder; plait or crochet to the desired length - as you’re crafty (didn’t I see you in the craft thread?), you could add beads and other pretties for a more permanent solution. My aunt would knit up a teeny tiny bag with a button through flap and a strap long enough to go over the head, but I think they look awful.
Having said that, have you got one of those little jewellery pouch bags? Could you sew one? The thing that worries me about any of the suggestions above is, it sounds as though they’re going to be added to the same chain that is too fragile to hold the ring by itself.
Or - a nice length of ribbon that you can just leave in the studio, gear bag or a pocket and put on when needed. Cheap options, I got a million of 'em!
Why do you say that? I just don’t want to buy a new chain until I know what’s going on it. If I buy a chain and then buy some sort of clasp that doesn’t fit it, then I have to buy another chain. Right now the only chain I have is very thin. That doesn’t mean I’m staying with THIS chain after I figure out what sort of fitting I’m getting.
And I don’t use/buy (or touch, if I can avoid it) leather. I’m a vegetarian and don’t support killing animals.
I think that a ribbon or a bag around my neck would look horrible, like you said. What I’m looking for is some sort of metal clasp or fitting that I can easily stick a ring onto, on a short chain around my neck. It needs to be something that looks nice enough that I can wear the chain most of the time (it doesn’t do me any good if I left it at home, after all–best just to get used to wearing it and make a habit of it.) My preference is even to take my ring off when doing things like putting on lotion, so I really want something that I can wear most of the time without looking like a complete idiot.
To clarify: I don’t want to waste money buying a nice chain that isn’t going to be the one I end up using, so that I end up buying two. That doesn’t mean I’m looking for “cheap cheap cheap!”
I want this to look nice. I want this to be a piece of jewelry that I will wear most of the time. I’d like something that compliments my ring, not just some shoelace to dangle it on.
What about using a magnetic necklace clasp? Something like this, maybe.
Make a short chain loop with the clasp ends (or use the 3 inch extender), hang that on your chain. To put your ring on the loop, separate the clasp, slip the ring through the loop and let the clasp ends join up again. If a magnetic catch is strong enough to hold a whole necklace on, then it should be ok for your ring.
Buy a chain twice as long as usual. It will hang down a long way when not holding the ring but I think long necklaces are cool. When you wish to secure the ring grab the chain, cross it over once, drop the ring over the end, take the end back behind your head and the ring will be just above your heart on a 2 strand necklace. To get it off, pick up the loop from behind your neck, take it to the front and the ring will drop off into your hand.
I don’t like the idea of something that can just pull apart, so no go on a magnetic clasp. Also, they look too utilitarian. I want something pretty.
don’t ask you may like long necklaces, but I don’t. Especially not when I’m doing art projects. Even when you have something doubled around like that, chances are one end will cinch up tighter and the other end will dangle too long. I like very short (barely longer than a choker) length necklaces. I don’t want anything swinging around in my way, plus I don’t like the way long necklaces look or feel.
