I need an education on down comforters

Try The Company Store. I can’t speak to price - I remember them being pricey, but they’ve a sale on now - but their quality is very good. They have both down and down alternatives, and buying guides too.

Oooh - their HQ is in Wisconsin. We know from cold up here, so’s it’s all good.

This thread requires me to ask the obvious question: What’s up with down?*

*Also a better thread title IMO.

ahem You have a PM with the Real Simple results.

**Chefguy **- would that I was so clever when I started this thread…

**purplehorseshoe **- got your PM - many thanks! Good info there!

In fact, lots of good comments all around. MsChiliPepper, your experience sort of explains why some customer reviews I’ve seen were raving, with the occasional “This thing sucks” tucked in there. I guess even comforter makers have bad days.

Daughter may get her birthday present really early, considering all the sales going on now.

TIp; You’ll find many, many down comforters on Ebay. Typically from people who got them as gifts, or bought them to try them out, and after one or two nights decided that they were allergic to down, or that the comforter was way too warm. Also, you get these double comforters where a summer and fall version get snapped together for a winter version. Usually people will sell one of those because a single season comforter is way warm enough.

So, what I’m saying is that you can get an comforter that is as good as new for a fraction of the price.
That might appeal to your daughter because the down can be gathered in an either bird friendly way or a very, very bird unfriendly way. Eider down is your best bet, if animal welfare is a priority. Anyway, I feel that second hand down, like second hand fur, is a bit less heavy on your conscience.

We have an all-seasons down duvet. It is a summer weight and a medium weight duvet that you can join together with poppers to give a super warm winter weight duvet.

Irishfella and I usually sleep under the medium weight one, and use the summer weight for guests (with extra blankets, naturally)- so, you know, bargain.

I air them daily and wash seldom- no feather poking or leaking, no clumping and super comfy.
