I need coffee, not pussy, you vociferous cuntrockets!

Ok, bingo! Chuck a few caffeine pills into the decaf

Actually, I remember during the frenzied dash to get a semester’s worth of work done in the last week of college, I was wired from dawn till dusk, and didn’t realize why until my ex pointed out that an ‘Americano’ coffee consists of one shot of espresso, diluted… and that I was in fact drinking a big mug of espresso :smack:

But anyway why don’t ya invest in an espresso machine thing for use at home, a real simple small one. Then fill up a thermos with very very strong super ultra coffee, and when you’re at work you need only add hot water to each shot of your espresso. In fact you don’t even need a thermos, a bottle will do if you’re adding hot water to it…

This post is a formal request that I might insert the word “cuntrocket” into daily conversation from this point in time until the day I pass from this earth.

Make your coffee with Water Joe, and you’ll be all set!

Because I can drink anything with caffeine in it, I got a Proctor-Silex water boiler ($20 at Sears), and whenever I feel hard up for coffee, I just brew myself a delicious steaming mug of Maxwell House Instant Coffee.

If you actually possess taste buds, it’s better to get one of those one-cup coffee filters that sits on top of your mug, and you just pour hot water through it.

I like you.
PS: my cure for working the night shift: sleeping disorder!

(PS, i know she already mentioned that, but it’s true. I really like coffee, but as a beverage, not a stimulant.)

That actually sounds delicious, thanks for the recommendation.

Well, Leah, there’s been nothing on the news about someone going berserk on a navy ship, so I’m guessing you made it through the night.

Depending on others for your buzz is a bitch, for sure. You definitely need your own little coffee maker and a thermos bottle so you know you’re set for the night shift. Good luck, and please don’t the kill cafeteria workers!

I am a former third shifter, and holy CRAP do I ever feel your pain.

Imagine my shock my first night at work when I discovered on lunchbreak (at 1 am) they they serve NO COFFEE. That’s right. NO COFFEE. NONE. WTF?? (this was also at a hospital). I guess it was just WAY too much work to you know, brew up an urn of it, even though they brewed it all goddamned day for the regular shift workers. I started making my own in a little coffee maker in my work area and sometimes I brought it from home in a Dunkin’ Donuts thermos. The stainless steel thermoses are the best ever bar none, believe me. They keep your coffee hot as hell for hours and hours. I usually filled mine at about 9:30 before leaving for work and there were times that I drank from it at 4 am and it was STILL hot.

I feel for you, but your only solution besides bring/brew your own is to wait until the first shift people arrive and talk to the cafeteria manager about the issue. That might help some.

Do you have ready access to boiling water? The easiest way I know of to produce a cup of good coffee is the French press. You can probably buy one at a good coffee shop or a semi-fancy kitchen supply store, and they also have them at IKEA if you have one nearby. You just dump the grounds in, dump the water in, wait a few minutes, put in the plunger, and presto. You could keep it on your desk.

Acute hypocaffeinemia, I like to call it.

I really hope you’re talking about your cat here.

My theory is that it’s not actually the caffeine keeping you awake, but the constant need to go to the bathroom. Then again, I drink an entire pot during the night. Really makes it a bitch when you have to get up every few hours during the day to pee.

Yes, Melitta makes those, and they work great, although to get really good coffee you need to use boiling hot water.

Tibidabo:
I’ve never actually tried espresso, but if it works that well, I may have to try it.

Fugazi:
That could be a part of it. I’m up every 20 minutes after the first hour, I swear.

matt_mcl:
I don’t really have access to boiling water except at the cafeteria tap. There isn’t any way to boil water in the lounge at my job, except for the microwave, and that’s sort of half-assed. I’m not allowed to keep food or drink at my desk, since it’s a biohazard area, but I could keep it in the kitchen if it had a stove or something of the sort. Not a bad idea for home, though.

Ponder Stibbons:
I wouldn’t dare bite the hand that feeds me… or that supplies me with my coffee. Hopefully I won’t need it much longer. I actually quit caffeine a while back, but once I started having symptoms from the sleep apnea… ugh. I’ve not been able to live without it.

BoBettie:
NO COFFEE? Are they insane?

bigbabysweets2000:
I thought you already liked me. I kid.

I’ve been pushing to get off the night shift, but my bosses are jerks. They won’t let me onto any other shift, and they’ve banned me from transferring to any other departments through fun little loopholes they can use against me. I’m stuck here, temporarily, at least.

Sophistry and Illusion:
The water boiler might be handy. Even if I quit drinking caffeinated stuff, I still really love herbal tea.

Geobabe:
This might be true. Either that or I’ll start running around the lab juggling samples. Either way, I won’t be sleepy!

Shamozzle:
Spread it around as you like!

I can’t say that I have a lot of experience with hospitals, but from my own infrequent trips there, I do seem to recall that it’s not uncommon to see little coffee makers stashed here and there behind workstations. Is it a possibility for you to get one for yourself and make your own coffee?

If I worked in an office setting, I could keep one at my desk and drink at my leisure.

It’s difficult for me to get away from my workstation at the lab to even drink the coffee after I buy it, because it gets so busy. I basically rip off my gloves and sanitize, run to the break room, chug really fast, and have to run back to my desk before samples pile up too much.

tips hat

This electric kettle is what I use, and it can bring 1/2 liter of water to a boil in about 3 minutes. It’s only $11 through amazon.com, and if you also get the Melitta filter, you are in bidness.

Second the “stainless steel Thermos”. They rock.

Here’s a two-quart model. Biggest I could find.

Yes. Yes they were. My first night I was like “OK, where’s the coffee?” When they said there’s no coffee at night, I actually laughed. OK, very funny- where is it? WHAT? You’re fucking KIDDING ME!!!

And not a single vending machine in the whole place. My kingdom for a god awful cup of machine brewed coffee with poker cards on the cup. I was flabbergasted, seriously.

And they wonder how hospital mistakes get made.
