I recently moved out of a rodent infested, 500 square foot, drafty, hellhole in a high crime neighborhood. I’ve been sorting through stuff and deciding what to keep, what to sell, what to donate, and what to trash. I am getting rid of a lot of books. However, I will still be needing a book shelf to keep my personal library in. I got out the measuring tape and I’d say 28” to 32” tall, 60” to 70” wide, and 14 - 18” in depth. Additionally, the book case must have solid sides. I have no use for a bookcase that has open sides. It must also have a solid back. Otherwise books will just fall between the book case and the wall and I won’t be able to get them. It must have a solid top and be sturdy. I will be putting my square display case (It is large but weighs fifty pounds at the absolute outside. My guess is that it weighs considerably less than that.) on top of the bookshelf.
I am currently using two stacked cardboard boxes as a desk. My flatscreen television currently stands on the floor. I want some kind of table/desk/entertainment center/shelving unit to put all this on. It has to have a desk height surface wide enough for two laptops (I keep my personal laptop on the right and my work laptop on the left.) and deep enough to accomodate a mouse pad in front of the work laptop. It also needs a shelf to hold the flatscreen televison, and another higher shelf for the powered antenna I need to get reception. I’d be very happy if it had a bunch more shelves as the wall behind my laptops has a whole bunch of unused space. Oh, it would also be great if the desk in question had space underneath for my wonderful, but large and very heavy (It easily outweighs the display case I mentioned earlier.) laserjet printer.
I searched for “bookcase” and “bookshelf” on Amazon. Each only gave me seven pages of results. None of them were remotely what I need. I searched for “bookcase” on Wayfair. It gave me two hundred pages of results. I am still slogging through them.
My new apartment is not remotely close to any second hand or thrift stores. So, I turn to the Dope for help.
Searching Amazon for 30 inch high bookcases, I found, among other things, this one from Bush, 30"H x 36"W x 12"D. So a set of two would give you the width you want.
As I said “I searched for “bookcase” on Wayfair. It gave me two hundred pages of results. I am still slogging through them.”. I have not searched on Ikea’s site yet.
If depth is the hardest thing for you to find, consider getting a piece of wood that is deep enough for your display case, and long enough to fit on top of the book shelf, creating a bit of an overhang atop the book case. Someone at your local Home Depot or similar store could cut you the perfect piece of MDF.
Then you can stop having to worry about depth, which might greatly widen your possibilities.
Once you find the book case I would recommend strapping it to the wall (most new furniture comes with wall strapping), unless you are very sure you are able to bottom-load it with heavy books.
what is your budget? That is the most important consideration. Lower prices will land you will pressboard/particle board pieces that will not last. Higher prices will provide you with (potentially) hardwood, which is better. I would search facebook marketplace as well as local advertisements for estate sales, yard sales, etc. Good pieces occasionally can be found at prices a fraction of what they would cost new.
Not sure what you want to spend. There are steel bookcases available, ULINE has a number of them.. They’re sturdy and long lasting. And if you want to save money look for used office furniture outlets. You’re looking for wide and short, but you can place a couple side by side to get the dimensions in your OP. And they are available up to 18" deep. You can also put a board or something on to to make them look more like conventional furniture.
Pfft, you have to drive hours to an Ikea, then walk around with their cool paper tape measures. Find shelves, find a dozen other things you don’t need but they’re so cheap that you can’t resist, then have some meatballs for lunch.
