I need opinions/advice on iPad Mini vs iPod Touch 5

It’s time for me to buy another gadget (I lurves me some cool gadgets). The iPod Touch I bought in 2009 died last year just as I won a 16GB iPad in a raffle so that’s a yay. But it’s too cumbersome for taking pics and vids and I really need something with more memory. I am an Apple gal all the way, so please keep the discussion to the pros and cons of the Mini vs the Touch 5. You opinions and advice are much appreciated. kthxbai.

I’d go with a Touch, they’re just so damn convenient. I can’t imagine having the Mini as a every day carry item, cool as they are.

well, right now my iPad is my everyday item - but it’s heavier than I’d like. As for the mini, I had an opportunity to use a friend’s mini recently and I liked it. It weighs about half as much as the full sized one, and taking pics and vids was manageable.

Something to consider: it may be more awkward to take pictures with a tablet but viewing the pictures and videos would be better on the larger screen.

Also, what other uses do you have in mind for the device besides pictures and videos?

A quick bit of research reveals that the Mini does not have Apple’s famous Retina display, so the Touch will have better clarity and sharpness.

Does it matter? You should see if you can borrow your friend’s Mini again and compare it to your current iPad to see if the clarity difference is noticeable to you.

And remember the larger screen will still help even if its not quite as sharp.

I’d use it as my everyday wifi device - games, radio, the Dope, etc, as well as taking pics and vids at get-togethers with friends or on vacations etc etc

screen size for viewing isn’t as important as screen size for typing. Maybe I’ll wait a bit until they put Retina on the Mini - surely they will . . . ?

I would imagine that they will, but you’ll have to wait until the next generation at the earliest to get it.

As for typing the larger keyboard makes it easier to hit the right key and less likely to hit multiple keys but makes you have to move your fingers farther to get there and can slow you down.

[Del]On a slightly different note, have you checked out the Tapatalk app? I use it on my phone for all my forums and find it to be incredibly useful.[/del] Nevermind, its android only. :banghead:

Thanks - I’ll look into it

No problem. I’m a mobile device geek so if you have any other questions feel free to pm me. If I don’t know the answer I’ll be happy to find out for you.

Since you already have the full sized iPad, an iPod Touch would be a great companion to it. I use my mini at home on the couch to surf and read, but the Touch is my on-the-go device since I don’t have a smart phone. I love that many of my apps sync between the two devices, keeps me organized without even trying.

I have to ask, do you have an iPhone? It does everything the iPod Touch does with the advantage of not needing wifi (plus can be used as a hotspot for your iPad).

I just read that on Tapatalk on my iPhone. I also have it on my iPad Mini.

As to the OP, I am pretty crazy about my Mini. But I don’t have a full size iPad, so I don’t know if that affects my opinion. I do find the Mini to be ultra-portable, and prefer reading and browsing on it to the phone, which would be analogous to the Touch. I have taken some photos with it but I do prefer my phone for that.

I have a seven year old flip/camera phone which is only for emergencies. I use the iPad (would use the new toy) for all other communications

I love my iPad mini, and I use it at home a ton…but I carry an iPhone 5 daily…I wouldn’t want to carry the Mini everywhere.

I have an iPad and my wife has the iPad mini. Looking at them side by side, the retina screen makes an enormous difference.

Apart from that, the iPad mini is a much nicer, neater form factor. The next version is bound to have a retina screen, and it can’t be too far off now. I’d wait for that: the upgraded retina screen really is worth the wait.

My wife also has an iPhone 5: of all the form factors availabe, I far prefer the iPad mini.

ETA: By the way, anyrose, my wife carries hers everywhere in her handbag. If you usually carry a medium or largish handbag or purse, an iPad mini will fit in just fine.

I carry a small tote into which the iPad fits nicely, but again I’d like to lessen the weight

There’s a big difference between the weight of the iPad and the iPad mini.

Is there a store nearby where you can compare the two side-by-side?

There are Apple stores nearby but I have trouble walking, so I want to do this on line

Since the OP is looking for advice, let’s move this to IMHO.
