I need to find an executor for my estate

I’m getting old and trying to put my financial “house” in order before I croak. There is no obvious person to ask to be an executer (apparently called a "personal representative in Michigan). How do I find someone to fill that role?

[Thanks, What’s]

I don’t think you need to.

Google AI says: “In Michigan, if someone dies without a will or named executor, the probate court will appoint an administrator to manage the estate.”

If you have a complicated estate and want things done with your assets, an executer would help. Normally it is a close family member or friend, but you can also hire a law firm.

If your estate is not complicated, you should just be able to write up a will and file it with the state, though this varies by state.

I found this: In Michigan, a will can be filed with the county probate court for safekeeping, typically for a fee, while the testator is still alive.

You can file your will with the county probate court where you live for $25. The court can’t give copies of the will to anyone except you while you are living. After you die, your family can bring your death certificate to the probate court to get a copy.

You’re welcome on the thread move.

I have two family members listed as executors of my estate, but also have a third person listed if neither is available: a professional fiduciary. Searching for “professional fiduciary in Michigan” turns up numerous options.

All of my immediate family are deceased.
I have two cousins appointed as executors even though they live a good distance from my home.
I hired a local young attorney a couple years ago who is willing to work with them upon my death to insure that everything is taken care of legally and appropriately.

I’d say the main question is, where would you like your assets to go?

I’m assuming you have no close family… and even if you did, I’d advise against appointing a family member as executor unless you really trust them. I’ve described in another thread how my wife’s sister showed her true colors after their mother’s death.

Talk to a lawyer first to make sure you have a clear will. Then ask that law firm or your bank about executor services.

An elder lawyer specializes in estate planning and can take the role of executor. Putting “elder lawyer near me” into Google should list firms who do this in Michigan.

Some lawyer should be consulted, even if it’s only a preliminary visit.

ETA: I started this draft hours ago when @What_Exit was the last poster. Finishing & posting now I see I’m mostly ninja’d.

An attorney who does wills and trusts is a decent choice. You want more like a 1-person shop than a larger firm or franchise law office.

Small-time CPA bookkeeping firms are another choice.

You (anyone) leave 2 distinct problems when you die.

One is financial, dealing w paying final bills, possibly selling real estate, and distributing assets. A hired executor / personal rep is great at that stuff.

The other problem is logistical. Selling, donating, or trashing your possessions. Clearing out your rented apartment or storage unit, etc. The stuff. Lots of labor, often little value other than sentimental.

That task is harder to hire out cost-effectively. Family, friends, neighbors who’re friendly are the ticket there. If such exist.

Good luck however you proceed.
