So I’ve watched (and read) the hell out of the Godfather movies, I’ve seen Casino and Goodfellas, and even Hoodlum. I’ve even watched Dick Tracy a bunch of times. I know there are a ton of mob movies and books out there, but honest to god I’m just not bright enough to find them.
I turn to you all at the Dope because I’ve been lurking here forever, and if there is anyone I trust with my entertainment it’s the good folks right here in Cafe Society. If you don’t mind, recommend me anything mob related. Movies, books, fiction and non-fiction alike. Mob movies and old horror movies are about the only things I can watch these days, and I’m afraid I’m starting to run out. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
For a non-fiction book, check out Selwyn Raab’s “The Five Families” In terms of fiction books, have you read Lorenzo Carcaterra’s “Gangster”? I’m sure you’ve read Mario Puzo’s other books, some of which are also about the mob.
Donnie Brasco is a great movie; so is Mean Streets. If you haven’t watched The Sopranos, you should. It is not like the typical TV series; it’s extremely cinematic. Each episode is feature-film quality.
I’ve read a few other Puzo books. Truth be told though, I’ve kind of forgotten about them. Haven’t seen “A Bronx Tale” yet, but that is one that is on my list. Thank you for your help, I’m looking up your first recommendation right now.
If there’s one thing in my life that I hate myself for, it’s not having seen “Donnie Brasco” yet. As for the Soprano’s, for some reason I never thought I’d be into the show. I’m willing to give it a shot, though.
