So. My wife is not inclined to spend one red cent at Hobby Lobby for personal and political reasons.
Their “store brand” of yarn is, sadly, the type she very much prefers. Michael’s used to carry a variety of brands and she was able to find material that pleased her eye- and knitters know what I mean by this- pleased her fingers as well.
So here’s the question. The “store brand” is likely NOT made by Hobby Lobby itself. The Wal-Mart brand of peanut butter isn’t made in a Wal-Mart factory.
Does anyone know what other brand of yarn is in fact the same yarn from the same mills, etc?
My mom (a crocheter) has had similar difficulties finding yarn since Pat Catan’s closed: The only remaining craft store around here is Michael’s, which she refuses to patronize. The only place she’s regularly finding retail yarn any more now is Marc’s, and of course like everything Marc’s sells, that’s inconsistently available.
I’m not familiar with hobby lobby’s yarn (I’ve never been to one). But from their website, it looks like there are a lot of types of yarn under their house brand (they’ve got some kitchen cotton, a few novelty yarns, a bunch of acrylics & acrylic blends). Is there a specific type of yarn your wife likes?
The Hobby Lobby Soft Secret is almost the exact same as Caron’s Simply Soft yarn. Caron is made by Spinrite, who manufactures a wide variety of yarns under different lines. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the store brand Hobby Lobby yarns are also made by them.
I am an avid knitter and crocheter. I love everything I have purchase from Knit Picks. Very good quality yarn that comes in a variety of fibers and weights, and a ton of colors. I realize this does not address the original questions, but if she checks it out she might find she likes it even better.
Second endorsement for Knit Picks and an additional suggestion of Webs which has some really nice yarns available and for very good prices too. I strictly use natural fibers, which are hard to come by in local craft stores (we have yarn shops too but they tend to be very spendy) so I do a lot of my yarn shopping online and these two spots have been stalwarts for me.
I was going to post pretty much the same. I do a lot of shopping at Webs. Their Valley yarn lines have been pretty dependable, plus you can find the smaller label brands there as well. I can’t find anything worth knitting at a craft store - its all highly acrylic. However, I do also support my LYS - spending though they are. Sometimes you want to touch.
