I need uncensored news sources

Several months ago I frequently went to a site called “Wake Up America” - some view it as a conspiracy theory site, but I did read some interesting things at that site. Suddenly it vanished. (which I find questionable) - they use to post who had visited the site and many many times the government had been on that site monitoring it.

The only ones out there now that I can find have a bent Christian slant to it. Does anyone know of any news sources that may not be as censored as mainstream news is?

Censored by whom?

Ah, the great media conspiracy. IMHO, the only conspiracy is a cynical willingness to feed us whatever form of news will generate the highest ratings. In other words, as Pogo observed long ago, the enemy is us.

Anyhoo, if you want some non-standard outlets, try Nando Times (free registration required) or Drudge. Or, if you want really non-standard, try Independent Media Center. Conversely, if you want something a little more mainstream, try The Economist. It’s non-America-centered perspective is, I find, quite refreshing. You’ll have to pay for that one, though.

As someone who was trained as a journalist, who worked as a journalist and who has been dealing with journalists for more than two decades I can tell you three things:

  1. I define censorship as prior rules or review by an outside body with the power to punish violators

  2. Except in well-known instances (war coverage, restricted access, classified documents, etc.) neither the U.S. nor state governments censor. Attempts at “prior restraint” are generally countered by very successful lawsuits.

  3. Neither of the first two means that journalists or their employers do not censor themselves. Rush Limbaugh “censors” the news differently from National Public Radio.

Bias is in the eye of the beholder.

You mean that site about sleep disorders? If not, what site were you talking about?

For news uncensored in ways that PBear refers to, I recommend NPR.

Or get a 10’ satellite dish. You can access free raw newsfeeds with no editing. Was told you can see US stuff that they don’t want you to.

All newsfeeds are “censored” by their owner/managers – else each would have infinite information.

Since the amount, type and sometimes the source of censorship is a matter of subjective opinion, I’ll move this to IMHO.

If the site merely listed hits from government servers, it could have been something as mundane as people who work at government agencies reading the news on lunch break/while they were working. There are ways to cover where you’re from if you prefer secrecy, which I assume any “government watchers” probably would have done if they had existed in this case.

Am I the only one who gets the feeling that “Wake up America” simply forgot to pay its web hosting bill? Nah, must be an elaborate government plot. The webmaster is being visciously interrogated by the NSA as we speak.

Anyway, Acquiesce, if you’re looking for some links, here’s a few, in approximate order from most to least mainstream (I was going to use the word “credible,” but I’ll reserve that judgement).

What do you mean by censored? People can’t tell you anything without exercising the most powerful form of censorship, what they don’t tell you.

Count me among those who believe there is very little in the way of censorship – self-sensorship is another story, and I would prefer just to refer to it as bias.

If you are looking for media without bias, good luck! All media shows bias, it’s part of human nature. Even if the particular newspaper or other media source doesn’t show much overall bias, individual reporters can’t help but shade their look at the news based on their personal past experience. (Although the better ones will try avoid showing bias.)

It is better for us, as consumers of news, to try to at least be aware of the biases of those who report the news. I try to read from sources on both the conservative and liberal sides in order to get as many views as possible on a subject, and then form my own opinions.

If you are trying to find news that is little-reported and mostly ignored by the mainstream press, you might try:

(You can make up your own mind about whether these are biased more to the right or left)

Project Censored is a look at under-reported news, produced by Sonoma State University.

Mother Jones – self-procaimed muck-raker. Broke the Ford Pinto story and many other well-known cover-ups. Once had great series on the additives to cigarettes (including how removing the additive that keeps the cigarette burning while not being puffed on would save thousands of lives per year) and lost large amounts of advertising money.

Jim Romanesko’s Obscure Store and Reading Room – little-reported news that is probably deservedly so! But also has numerous links to news sources

The News Insider – calls itself your “daily source for under-reported news and analysis”.

NewsWatch Canada – college-sponsored, similar to Project Censored, with a Canadian outlook.

Between The Lines – the web page of a nationally-syndicated weekly radio newsmagazine that reports on under-reported news stories. (This site is temporarily down for upgrading.)

Committee to Protect Journalists – if you are looking for censorship at the source, this might be the best place. They list reporters killed while reporting and arrests of journalists. They also issue the Press Freedom Awards to journalists who have risked their lives to get the stories out.
