It just arrived in the mail! That’s just so great!
Is this a Region 0, 1, or 2 DVD set?
It’s an all region box with 6 DVDs and 11 movies.
Disk 1: Nausicaa & Only Yesterday
Disk 2: Whisper of the heart & Mononoke Hime
Disk 3: Totoro & Ponpoco
Disk 4: Porco - Rosso & Laputa
Disk 5: Grave of The Fireflies & Kiki’s Delivery Service
Disk 6: Ocean Waves & On Your Mark Music Video
I’ve already watched Totoro and Mononoke and am going to watch Porco Rosso now. It’s been some 6 or 7 years since I last saw it. This is all just so great!
Where did you buy it???
Ebay. There were a lot of them being sold there. I bougt mine for 36$ and then the shipping, from Hong Kong I believe, was another 16$. It’s in japanese but there are english and chinese subtitles.
Just after posting this I started thinking, Hong Kong? It may be pirate then but that’s not the impression I got. It’s a nice box and it doesn’t look pirate but any more info would be appreciated.
Supposing it is not I reccomend it. It’s a bit expensive and it has no extras (commentaries, trailers, etc…) and I can’t really say about the image. I’m not so picky and I watch DVDs in my computer. In the computer it looks as good as any other movie. But there are 11 movies here! And some music thingy I haven’t watched yet. With two movies per disk I’m surprised it fit at all.
Some HK DVD info. There are links on the site (maybe in the forums? It’s been a while) to sites that rate the quality of the HK DVDs.
If it’s the one on the right-hand side down the middle of this webpage, it’s a pirated copy. I’d bought the same set, and it’s a pretty obvious pirated copy – you can even see where they had to turn over the laserdiscs when making the master DVD’s.
If it’s not, then way to go! Great deal.
Yeah that’s the one. I can’t honestly say I’m sorry though. I have the movies and I didn’t know they were pirates. Thinking about it I should have, but I didn’t. To my untrained eyes they are good quality and the varying quality of the subtitles hasn’t bothered me so far.
I wouldn’t have bought it had I known. I want this to be clear.
It did put a damper to my mood to find out.
I think I should ask a mod to lock the thread now.
< cough >
Um…before it’s locked, Musicjunkie, lemme say that you’re not the only person who was fooled into thinking it was legit.
I mean, they even have a “holographic” authenticity sticker on it!

Before it is locked, don’t forget, Disney is slowly but surely releasing his work on DVD. Er… I had a link, but on other computer.
Thanks for the support Fenris.
E-Sabbath, I knew about that, but I have yet to hear any talk about Porco Rosso and that is one of my favorites along with Totoro and Spirited Away (which I understand are being released now).
I hope you enjoy Ponpoco. It was one of the strangest things I have ever seen. Really, who would have expected raccoons to fight the encroaching humans with their shape changing testicles? It was perhaps the most bizarre cartoon I have ever seen.
Those weren’t raccoons. They were Tanuki. Who have giant testicles. I have a japanese Transformer. His name is Heinrad. He is a Tanuki and a clock-inna-belly type standup animal.
He has gigantic testicles. Also, a bottle and a ledger. They merge into a gun. No, not the testicles, that’s where his ‘spark’ or soul is located. Oddly appropriate.
Let me repeat that. Transformer. Cybertron. (Autobot/Maximal). Toy. Kid toy.
GIGANTIC TESTICLES.
Well I figured Tanuki meant raccoon when watching the movie. But I guess it can be closer to shape changer with E-Sabbath’s addition. Still, they look exactly like raccoons.
I have to confess that I’m having a hard time feeling guilty about buying it, either. (Not guilty, but dumb since I paid more than twice what MJ did). Disney has had the distribution rights to all these movies for years but is just sitting on them.
In the case of Pompoko, this is my favorite anime. It will never be released in the US, for the reasons mentioned above – Disney owns the rights, and Disney simply isn’t going to release an animated cartoon with giant testicles. Even a movie like Porco Rosso that is more difficult to call “offensive,” will probably never get released because it’s a little more adult in tone.
So that means that if I want to see these, I have to resort to some “gray-market” method. I think the whole region-encoding business is just complete BS.
For the time being, I’ll allow this discussion to continue as long as it doesn’t seque into discussion of how to obtain other pirated DVDs. Thanks.
Lets put it this way
region 0
English/chinies subs
no dub
It’s a pirated copy
one the other hand some of the movies in that box set arn’t even licensed (wich in my mind makes it no worse than a fan sub) or are out of print on top of that
the owner of my local comic shop (where a i get a lot of my anime from) also bought that set (he never even touched pirates before) he said he bought becuse that Ghibli hasn’t even got around to realsing some of these moveis out on DVD in japan Let alone a dvd box set (wich if they ever did get around to puting de would by in a sec). He didn’t even want to think about how long disney would take puting them out here
that should be “he would buy it in a sec” not “de would by in a sec”
But Disney is screwing with them slightly: one that’s particularly bothersome is Kiki’s Delivery Service. When she’s flying along, in the Japanese version, there’s a catchy Japanese tune. The Disney version has this annoying American pop song.
Apparently in the Disney release of Totoro, the scene where dad bathes with the kids will be cut or altered (per a completely unsubtantiated rumor I heard)
Neither of these are huge problems, but they’re enough to be annoying.
