Without even a proper ration of coffee, I faced the Google News headlines this morning and saw:
Sun’s Magnetic Field Flip Won’t Doom Earth, Scientists Say
There were several other headlines about the same event, just as alarming.
I’ve seen little toy magnets do some pretty freaky things, never mind what big magnets can do. And this isn’t some little toy found in a crackerjacks box, for heaven’s sake – It’s the Almighty SUN – the biggest magnet for trillions of miles around! And it’s about to Flip?? :smack: … I went looking for my wife, to tell her not to buy any green bananas. I even toyed, briefly, with the thought of clicking Like on the Facebook page of the relative I’ve not spoken to for years.
Yes, the headlines did emphasize “Might Not Doom Earth, Scientists Hope,” but could we really trust them? They said the same thing about the Large Hadron Collider but as soon as they turned it on, the Illuminati staged the Sandy Hook massacre and used it as cover to ship all the gold in Fort Knox to Kenya. If the LHC could do that, despite the Pollyannish scientists, I didn’t want to imagine what this magnetic flip would entail. Even a quadrillion-ton magnet would scare me, and the Sun is a trillion times bigger than that.
Curiosity finally prodded me despite despair, and timidly I moved the mouse to click. Was this a once-in-a-billion year event, or was it more commonplace, and responsible for the Great Extinctions? Would we disappear in a puff, or would there be several hours of fireworks to enjoy? Was it coming soon, or would we be able to enjoy the last season of Breaking Bad? What effect would it have on the 2014 election?
… I clicked …
The same thing happens every 11 years! :smack: :smack: It was all just a mundane pointless event, hyped up with talk of “Doom” just because yesterday was a slow news day. :smack:
I’m leaving this in MPSIMS rather than BBQ Pit. I’m too flabbergasted to think of appropriate cuss words.
