Which makes him a rabid anti-gun communist, naturally.
If my pediatrician, electrician, dry cleaner, etc asked me about gun ownership I’d tell them I don’t own any. I’d be lying, but I feel free to lie when someone oversteps what I feel are their boundaries.
Are pediatricans and dry cleaners interchangeable?
I know that for me, I regard my children and my suits as soemething other than equivalent.
Just when I think gun nuts can’t be bigger assholes, someone goes ahead and proves me wrong. WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! A doctor gave me a pamphlet about safety! WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! But there are other things that could cause death or injury! WAAAAAAHHHHHHH! And they didn’t ask about those! WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
Here’s the straight dope: Lots of morons own guns. It’s almost a requirement. If handing out 1000 pamphlets saves 1 life, I’d say it’s a win. If you don’t want or need it, fine. Recycle it. But quit your fucking whining.
Actually, I think this is a misuse of the case as well. McDonalds was warned that they served their coffee too hot, precisely because of the danger of scalding. They kept on serving it too hot, hence their liability. Other companies didn’t serve it that hot because they recognized the danger.
And the part that always gets left out when people talk about the coffee case: the little old lady suffered full thickness (third degree) burns over 6% of her body, requiring painful and expensive skin grafts and multiple (very painful) debridement and an 8 day hospital stay. This wasn’t an “ouch”, this was a “holy shit, my 79 year old choochie just melted.”
And you know what she asked McDonald’s for? $20,000. That’s it. They said, “Suck it, bitch. Sue us..” And so she did. The jury decided the amount of the award (and it was reduced by the judge), not her. AND, no one really knows what they ended up paying out, because even after a court judgement was rendered, they did a closed door deal to figure out what they’d actually pay out.
That would be a legal requirement.
Hospitals won’t even let a newborn out the door if you do not have a car seat, and usually they offer car seat installation and safety information.
Are they anti-car?
Providing objective advice on relevant safety issues is absolutely a pediatrician a job.
What’s the relevant law, in that case?
Given that we don’t have a licensing procedure, and many gun owners do not have a CCP and have taken no classes, does it seem more reasonable to you that a pediatrician would ask these questions?
I mean, saying “I am in favor of people taking gun safety classes to own a gun” seems to be the same as “I believe some people do not currently know the basics of gun safety”. Given that you agree that some gun owners do not know the basics of gun safety, doesn’t it seem reasonable that a doctor would seek to educate those gun owners?
In other words, why are you ok with the government forcing gun owners to be exposed to information in order to be gun owners, but you are affronted that a doctor would offer to expose you to the same information voluntarily?
My issue with this is that I get, at most, 7 minutes with the physician. I have a lot to cover in those 7 minutes that we had to book months ago. Now we are going to spend time on this. If I answer “yes” then I will probably lose a full minute, minute and a half.
I want to talk about the rash, symptoms, growth chart, nutrition, expectations, immunizations, etc.
Now, I just say “no.” Saves us all a lot of time.
If I had unlimited time with the doctor, it would be fine.
Then it sounds like you need a new physician. I’ve never heard of a doctor that looks at a clock and decides she doesn’t have time to talk about rashes or immunizations. Every doctor I’ve had has set aside time for questions- if not with her then with a nurse.
The culture gap has my jaw hitting the floor at the idea of a society where that question is even worth asking. It’s totally alien to me.
I really don’t see the big deal, though. When I was pregnant and when our kid was tiny, it seemed like every person in any remotely child-related profession felt the need to give us an intensive quiz and lecture on proper car seat use. I didn’t assume that they were anti-car, or that they were going to come drag our car away in chains.
I don’t think you realize how dumb people are on the average. And I don’t think you realize how many dumb gun owners there are.
Darn tootin’!
And when a COPD patient walks into the office with a lit cigarette while hauling his oxygen tank, the doctor should just STFU.
If your doctor won’t take as much time as necessary to sit with you and answer all your questions and address all your concerns, you need to find another doctor.
You could always just show him your gun and demand more time with him?
Mine asks if my husband beats me. (The question is “do you feel safe in your home”.)
Do men get asked that, or is it just women?
Only my gyn asks me that, not my real doctor. And it’s always really cursory. I don’t think I look like the abused type, plus I never come in with bruises or anything.
Ooo! I have one. A friend of mine, her husband works in a woodshop. Twice in two years he cut the same thumb really badly. The second time it was the same hospital, and they asked him, “[Name], is someone hurting you at home?”
But here’s the clincher! His wife was sitting right next to him!
Boggle.
I bruise easily, so I usually have many large bruises of various ages on my body. I have never been asked that.
When my wife was pregnant, she got asked several times if she felt safe in the home. A couple of times, when she was asked to give a urine sample, there was a form included in the packet of stuff they gave her. It said if she needed help dealing with an abusive relationship, just check this box and turn the form in with all the other stuff. It gave her the opportunity to make contact with help while in the bathroom by herself, in complete privacy. I can see why they do it - particularly for pregnant women who could be bringing a new baby into a potentially dangerous situation. I wasn’t offended or anything. I was mostly just sad that that’s the world we live in these days.
