This is my first time posting in The Pit, but this didn’t seem to belong anywhere else. The first story just absolutely maddens me - this kid has ‘no idea’ why he beat the hell out of that boy. The print edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an even more disturbing picture of the boy, heart-breaking as it is posted side-by-side w a ‘before’ shot. If anyone bails this loon out (bail set at $100,000) he’s gonna get jumped for sure.
The 17-year-old is damned lucky our justice system won’t let him undergo the ending of The Stranger.
I was impressed with how calm and level-headed the response from the 8-year-old girl’s family was. Had I been in their shoes, I would have wanted the teachers involved fired, no matter what it did to their careers.
I think vigilante justice is wrong. I don’t support the death penalty. And I think there must be something seriously messed up in the lives of the offenders that turn them into such heartless monsters. However as in the case of the 17-year-old beating the little kid, sometimes I’m willing to look the other way when others–especially if they’re family of the victims–don’t share my views on the matter.
