I Pit Burbank, California Cops!

That’s a really good analogy.

Oh, well. This changes everything. If you’ll pinky swear then we can really be sure.

Something other than “It was a workplace argument, and the 911 caller overreacted. We ensured that everything was settled down and there would be no further disturbances.” I’m sure that police officials HATE hearing that sort of thing… what do they give these officers guns and handcuffs for if they’re not going to haul people in?

So what? The OP wasn’t unstable or suicidal. The police were wrong and their error caused the OP to be stripped of basic liberties for 3 days before he even got to see a judge. We have a little something called habeas corpus in this country. That is unacceptable. The officers should be punished and the OP compensated.

He wasn’t held by the police. He was held by a psychiatric facility.

However, the OP can sue the cops and/or the facility if he wants. If he’s really telling the truth, I know I would.

Did you miss the part where he went voluntarily? Once he is there they have a legal obligation to hold for observation. Habeas Corpus has nothing to do with it. He wasn’t arrested. He wasn’t held in a jail. He was in a hospital. Most of us can see that we are being told one side of a story that probably has many layers. I have no doubt the OP’s feeling are genuine. But that does not mean that others involved may have seen things much different. Or that a disinterested third party may not see things different. I would feel safe to say that there is no where in the country, including Burbank, that a verbal argument routinely ends with someone being taken to the hospital for mental evaluation. More went on here than we are being told. If you can’t see that then there is nothing more that can be said.

Says who? The guy who got into such a fierce shouting match at his place of business that someone felt the need to call the police, and thinks of it as “just business”.

Maybe this is the 1% of the time that a cop decides to go completely overboard in a lust for power. My guess is that it’s the 99% of the time that the “victim” has no idea just how argumentative/hostile/bizarre they’ve been acting and thinks they’re being held for absolutely no reason.

That’s happened more times than I can count. Hell, even if you “flip out hard” and say the word ‘suicide’ in the back of an ambulance, most paramedics will be obligated to take you against your will to the hospital because if you wander out of the ambulance and into traffic, your family has a potential lottery ticket from my employer and my license is jeopardy.

There’s ALWAYS more tot he story. Locrian has an axe to grind and he (or she) is telling the story to fit the grinding wheel. 19 years now I’ve been at this, on the south side of Chicago, no less, and the people who have “bad luck” with “moronic cops” are 8 times from 10 bringing it on themselves by acting like belligerent assholes in the first place.

Just as Loach said, as a cop, there’s no vested interest in hauling your dumb ass to the hospital. Now this is especially true if you puke, piss or crap in my car, that means I’m out of service for an hour or more while the squad cleaners (that deal with biohazards) clean and sanitze my squad.

Bottom line is, the attention of the police isn’t drawn to people who aren’t trying to draw their attention. Cops are behind me every day, two state troopers and three seperate CPD units just this morning and nada. Because I follow the rules of the road (most of the time) have all my stickers, registration and insurance up to date and my vehicle is in good operating condition. I typically don’t get into screaming matches with, well, anyone and with the exception of the time last year where my front plate had fallen off and I didn’t notice it, I haven’t been pulled over in YEARS.
