Quoted for truth. I speak several languages (badly!) but I find @Johanna incredibly instructive in cases where language is discussed.
I wonder if our good doctor even has a second language. I mean, I am an amateur, but I can get by in colloquial Bahasa Indonesia, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Mozambiquan Portuguese, Zimbabwean chiShona… and my very British English.
I’m only “good” at English. The rest vary from “barely conversant” to “got a grade ‘A’ in GCSE exams”.
(The actual Portuguese Portuguese people laughed at me when I went there because my accent and vocab were so parochial… but fortunately English is widely spoken there)
That’s so much fun, isn’t it? For example, seeing the links between the Mozambican Portuguese and the Bahasa Indonesia words for the days of the week, or for “table” and a few other words. Those similarities are totally unexpected (to me, anyway - Johanna wouldn’t be at all surprised) and delightful.
When I was (barely) learning Portuguese, but already had a large Bahasa Indonesia vocabulary, I loved the overlap as it made it much easier to remember the Portuguese words.

I feel no sympathy whatsoever. That was a spectacular example of digging up unverified cites on Google to support a position he clearly had no real knowledge of.
He didn’t just use a shovel to dig himself in, he handcrafted it by fashioning the handle from an oak he chopped down in his backyard, and he built his own blacksmith facility just so he could forge the blade.
I think it was one of the most efficiently-wrong posts we’ve seen on the dope per se in awhile. By multiquoting, he managed to be wrongly nitpicking nitpicks on several topics at a time.
Although you can probably easily find such concise wrongness elsewhere on the internet, and definitely from politicians.
Also a perfect example of his conviction that revisionist history must be true because, well, it’s revisionist, and his cited articles and books prove it, not that he bothered to read them for comprehension.
I understand die Kaapse Taal, and Stellenbosch Afrikaans, but I’ve never, to my shame, learnt to speak either. I mean I can, but so badly it is embarassing.
And when I say “understand” that means I know a lot of swearwords, I learnt much of what I know in taxis from gaatjies… who may not be the best language tutors.
For non South Africans, a “taxi” is a minibus form of public transport, the gaatjie is the person who drums up business and handles the money, and both he (it is almost always a man) and the driver can be guaranteed to produce some of the finest swearwords - and Afrikaans excels here - I have ever heard.
An example translates to “you are lower than a snake’s shit’s shadow”, though it is more colouful in Afrikaans.
Don’t worry, I’m sure his daddy became an expert at Tagalog while he was on Douggie McArthur’s personal staff. Why, I bet McArthur even taught it to his daddy personally. That is doubtless where he picked up his expertise in linguistics.

I’ve got nothing against people who aren’t that bright. He isn’t that bright, but that’s not his problem. It’s that he’s dishonest to the point of lying compulsively.
