I don’t know that they are a troll. They have some “interesting” ideas that they present with force and without much skill, but they really aren’t that evocative, so if they are trolling, they aren’t doing a very good job at it.
And even if that is the case, the fact that DrDeth throws a rock through a window everytime he sees one doesn’t mean that he did a public service by throwing a rock through this particular one. He saw a window and threw his standard #notallwhitechristianmen! rock at it.
A stopped clock may be right twice a day, but it is still useless at telling the time.
His favorite thing here is to go down a long thread, quoting everyone in it in one big multipost, and answering, “Yep”, “Agreed!”, “So true!”, etc, to each and every comment, as though we were all just waiting on the edge of our seats for his revered remarks on every post. He adds nothing whatsoever to the conversation but his stamps of approval.
To be fair, the comment I think you are referring to was in his own thread (things I learned from cop TV shows), where I think responding like this to people contributing is good manners rather than pomposity. I haven’t noticed that he’s guilty of this habitually - a few other posters come to mind more readily.
Someone’s getting paranoid… see the Banned words and Karen threads in ATMB:
“Or was it just because I was the OP?”
“Your motive here i suspect, and I think it has nothing whatsoever to do with grammar.”
or, just maybe, it was because no-one else chose this particular stupid issue as their hill…
I wrote a joke for this awards show that had the word “midget” in it. And someone from the network came down to our offices and he said to me, “Hey, you can’t put the word midget on TV,” and I said, “I sure would like to.” And he said, “No! ‘Midget’ is as bad as the ‘n-word.’” First off: no. No, it’s not! “Do you know how I know it’s not,” I said to him, "is because we’re saying the word ’midget,’ and we’re not even saying what the ‘n-word’ is! If you’re comparing the badness of two words, and you won’t even say one of them? That’s the worse word.
DrDeth can bring out the worst in people, I’ve gotten noted for getting too riled up by his deliberate misquoting of me. I put him on ignore after that, and he was on ignore for some time before I removed him after he pledged (to the board) he’d change some of his behavior. And he did. (SOME.)
I don’t blame you for going there with him, it happened to me.
I haven’t had a really infuriating interaction with him for a while. I disagree with him a lot on things, but that’s okay.
He is still the only person on my ignore list. His posting just rubs me the wrong way, and I fear I could probably end up getting noted or warned if I engaged.
