I pit DrDeth

Nope. Not if you know how to use the ignore feature.

What is the over/under for the number of days until banned?

Which does nothing to stop a hijack of a thread you are interested in unless everyone puts him on ignore.

Then I guess we’d better all hurry up and do it, eh? Get the word out! We’ve got not 72 hours before time is up.

That’s always the problem. There has never in the history of humanity been a troll famine.

No, the problem is “just ignore the troll and they’ll go away!” is the most useless advice in the world if the word “TROLL” is not actually attached to someone’s name. It is not as if the rest of us get a PM stating “So-and-so is a troll-Do not respond to their posts”.

I mean, sure, but there is, like a 1700+ thread on this one particular character, so… what are y’all waiting for?

Speaking in DD’s most minor defense, after their previous flameout they had gotten much better for much of the time I’ve been on the boards. Not perfect, no, but better. Probably an irritating poster to many, but not ban-bait IMHO (ignore is entirely a personal preference, and power to you for using it rather than drive up your blood pressure).

Will they make a similar improvement, or honest effort after realizing that the mods are on their last fuck as it were? I think DD will – but I suspect they’ll slip again as well, or something will trigger a major rant and that’ll be the end. To be honest, while I understand some of the reactions to the issue that got them the suspension, I didn’t see why they picked that issue to obsess on and cross post in a panicked manner over three separate threads.

ETA - FTR, I have read the various posts here and on other threads where it was clear that DD was being casual with the truth and defensive about it, or at best very credulous about claims made by others including his family. But again, entirely IMHO, he’s about 2-300% better than, say, Sam Stone who brazenly lies, misquotes, or misrepresents on every single political thread for the last few years. I know there are people who feel that other than anything touching on politics, environmentalism, and Elon Musk that SS provides useful, thoughtful information, but I don’t share that sentiment.

For irritating, I read lying and insulting jerk.

I’ve given the reasons I don’t have this blight on the board on ignore earlier in this thread: I pit DrDeth - #1593 by Dissonance.

Now, what I find astounding is a mod giving us all prior notice that a suspended poster is due to return. For the record there’s nothing indicating this warning of the impending unsuspension was posted with the mod hat on rather than a mod posting as a poster. However, has this ever happened before? That alone speaks volumes.

Substitute “military/history” for “politics” and you’re describing DrDeez. He brazenly lies, misquotes and misrepresents in every thread dealing with the military or history that he has ever touched. Only it doesn’t just go back the last few years. He isn’t casual with the truth; he wouldn’t recognize the truth if it crawled up his ass and died there.

Um, not really any major thought.
I have a reminder on my Email Calendar to restore his title and I just thought I would post he was back soon. This isn’t a procedure or anything, literally just an FYI.

It might have come off as more neutral if it was posted in the ATMB thread instead of the Pit thread IMHO. Feel less like chumming the waters that way.

That may be the factor that differentiates the responses. I’m interested, but not deeply involved in military/history, and so am probably not offended/insulted to the same degree when seeing DD caught out in massive inconsistencies/lies about the Pacific campaign and his effort to use his father as “proof” of his assertations despite the evidence (as probably the most heated example, see, I told you I read it all!).

But, living in an America that seems bound and determined to abandon any semblance of democracy for fasicm, (probably followed by unrecoverable climate change in the far to close future) I get very involved when SS shits up a thread. And I probably follow 4-5x political threads to the history threads.

So the sheer degree of frustration and disgust is proportional to our exposure and/or involvement.

And so the improvements I saw in more general posting may well not have been reflected in more in-depth threads. And I’m not disputing that the warning and suspension wasn’t earned, just hoping that the probable loss of this place will get DD to be a lot more careful, honest and accurate to the benefit of all.

At first there was an improvement, which is why I took DD off ignore at that time, then had to put DD back on ignore again for being an asshat playing a game where they deliberately twist what I say into the opposite and lie about it, and I can’t really say anything about it in the thread to defend myself without violating board rules. When you have to dance around a person trolling you in order to not be accused of saying something bad about them… Fuck that, just put em on ignore because it’s a complete waste of time.

Can’t wait for this toxic lying fucker to finally get permabanned. It’ll make the board a lot better.

Or gun control, which does come up maybe a few times in politically tinged threads.

Or apparently Dungeons and Dragons (I guess he or his dad knew Gary Gygax or something like that).

Or, to a much lesser extent, thinking social norms (including things like misogyny and racism) and statesmanship hit their greatest and most desirable peak back in the 70s or 80s.

If it were just the WWII stuff, he’d be a mostly harmless rando stirring shit on the internet. He gets a reputation around here because he’s got more than one such pet cause and acts like a dipshit in all of them, including the subject of this latest suspension.

It’s also greatly exacerbated by the fact he’s not remotely the sharpest tool in the shed.

Sorry, I really dislike the fatherfucker in question, and think he should have got a ban, not a suspension, but this really has the appearance of harassment - like, getting the mob ready for the poor asshole as soon as he comes back. No good reason for it, I think, and not a great look coming from a mod especially.

If the suspension is supposed to make him behave better (as some seem to think it did before), this heads-up from you is really counterproductive to that intent.

Well it looks like I fucked up. But that seems to be a lot of intent read into a very simple reminder line.

I should have just not posted anything. Funny thing is last time I got flack for closing this thread (with permission), this time for a simple reminder.

DrDeath has the power to make people fuck ip in any of their dealings regarding his status or presence.

Shunning him really does seem like the only safe answer.

I think you’re one of the most transparent mods this board has ever had. You’re very willing to explain your thought processes and keep posters in the loop.

Every now and then it comes across as biased, like a ref making calls for the crowd’s sake. This is one of those times.

I don’t think that’s your intent at all, just classic W_E transparency. But Dibble is ultimately correct: the end result is a priming of the pump for him to get jumped on when he comes back.

Honestly, it would make sense to permanently lock pit threads for posters who are suspended for more than a couple of days. Nothing to stop a new one if they deserve it, but if the purpose of a suspension is to give the poster an opportunity to act right, keeping their thread active probably isn’t helpful. It’s just picking at a scab instead of letting it heal over.

Punishments are either permanent or they aren’t. A poster coming back from a suspension should be given a clean start, and if they don’t deserve that small courtesy then they should gave been given a ban instead of a time out.

We had a strong request to reopen this thread after the last suspension. I don’t remember all the details but I think after a Mod discussion it was decided to reopen it. I don’t recall being in favor of it though. I think I said, just start a new one if you feel the need.
