Now this argument always fails to make sense to me.
Marriage has always been a governmental institution. It is a way to regulate property, inheritance, and other economic situations. Why would marriage ever not be a government issue?
Religion did not invent marriage and most of our current marriage laws can be traced to Roman law not Christian or Jewish religious beliefs.
(But, if a Justice of the Peace came at me with a marriage license, I suppose I do support a “stand your ground” law that would permit me to shoot him.)
