Okay, everyone feel all good about themselves now? Cause here’s your answer:
This company, like Wal-Mart, Red Lobster and Olive Garden, is simply going to cut hours of most of it’s employees to below 30 a week, and then not offer any health insurance to them. At all.
So as opposed to getting 98% of what you want, you get 0%. You’re going to cost people money and benefits. And you won’t end up punishing Hobby Lobby. At all. No fines. No nothing. All perfectly legal.
Regardless of their religious viewpoint, and your disdain of that, you need to think of the workers, and what is in their best interest. If it were YOUR job, would you rather have the insurance without contraceptive care, or no insurance AT ALL AND a reduction in your hours?
Seriously people, you’d throw the baby out with the bathwater to make some obscure anti-religious snarky point.
Just to clarify something that I would have thought was obvious. Nobody’s trying to make some “anti-religious snarky point”. This is about providing health care coverage to people, which is actually a very serious thing and affects people’s lives.
If anybody is trying to make a “snarky point”, it’s people like Green who would deny coverage to his employees over this issue.
I think what you meant to say was that regardless of how some people are going to react to this law due to their religious beliefs, we need to think of health care in a broader perspective, and that includes contraception.
It may well be the case that companies may decide to cut hours to keep their employees below the 30 hours required to receive benefits. However, employees whose hours are cut are likely eligible for unemployment benefits to make up the difference. (The link talks about Minnesota, but I know this is also true in Pennsylvania, and is probably true in most, if not all, other states.) This will increase the premiums that Hobby Lobby will have to pay into the system, and will likely raise the ire of the various state departments of labor.
It’s not true in many states outside the Midwest, as far as I know. Almost every state has a “short time” program to make up earnings for seasonally underemployed workers but the employer generally has to agree to enrol in it.
I like the response from some guy who says to just let government handle all insurance. In fact, that’s what we liberals want, single-payer, not-for-profit, government-run health care. Thanks idiot Freeper!
I don’t get the thing about Judo. Are they advocating martial arts fighters attacking the White House en masse?
I stumbled into the brand new HL near my town 2 weeks ago.I’d never heard of the chain. I was impressed by its large selections (of dust collectors) but bought a unique poster, a TOOB of world famous structures (Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Bldg, etc). ($8.99) and a plastic model kit of 5 NASA rockets. The kit had no price sticker on it so while I was standing in a long line at the register, they had to intercom to the rear of the store and ask someone to look up the price. Well, the response was $11.99. They had to intercom the request because THEY DO NOT SCAN BARCODES! Is that an Xtian thing, maybe cuz there might be a 666 combination? What is that all about? On another trip I found that the correct price was $29.99, BTW.
I went back on the next Sunday and saw their little sign about not being open (see Exodus 31:15).
Then I went to the well-established Michael’s and found a better selection of many similar craft items. Many more TOOBed subjects at only $7.99.
I haven’t been to Michael’s since it moved farther away. I am sorely disappointed at this news as I just bought 99%of my children’s Christmas presents there and was extremely happy that I was able to give them an almost battery-free and creative Christmas. It hurts my feelings as someone who whole-heartedly tries to live up to the kindness, love and responsibility for my fellow humans that Jesus speaks of, that so many so-called Christians would hide behind their religion to perpetuate greed. I know it’s nothing new, and is the basis for most, if not all religions, but it still hurts my heart. I guess I’ll start driving the extra few miles.
I hope the government smacks them do hard upside the head. Fucking pricks think they can do different than the law requires. I’m sick of pseudo persecution.
If they cite Exodus 31:15, they are taking off on the wrong day. Then again, what do you expect from the biblical scholars who think the Bible defines life as starting at conception?
This actually causes a significant dilemma for me.
The yarn Hobby Lobby makes is the best-quality acrylic yarn I have found yet. They also almost always have 40% coupons that make things from other brands quite cheap as well.
I’ve justified purchasing things there in my mind various ways over the years, but I think I do have to stop. I’ve almost certainly spent over $1,000 there in total, which essentially means I’ve been funding an organization that actively works to fight against causes I support. :o
Yeah, I love that yarn. I’ve had to be very firm with myself, and only buy that yarn there, and not look around at their other merchandise. I’ve done this since I noticed the little sign on their door that says something like “We’re closed on Sunday so that our workers can have time to worship”. If a place wants to be closed on Sunday, fine. However, when they get all up in my face about how pious they are, then I decide to take my money to another store. I’ll also avoid a company that has the fish sign, or a cross, or some visible statement of faith on any of its ads. I figure that they don’t want to associate with a godless heathen like me anyway.
