I mean, some people don’t view animals with as soft a heart as they view people, not by a long shot. Right or wrong, there are tons of people like that. Possibly, she is a sweetheart to most humans? Takes in the sick and the needy, and whatnot? I mean, do we really want someone like that to rot away alone in a nursing home?

There obviously is a shelter near her, so if she felt she had to do the dishonourable thing and get rid of a cat she promised to look after (and it was dishonourable; she lied, she broke her word, and she treated an animal in her care badly - three very dishonourable things), she could have taken it to a shelter to be re-adopted or euthanized humanely (she could have explained that she was bringing it in for her son, if they questioned the ownership of the cat). Just dumping it is one of those things we do in modern society that I particularly hate; take responsibility for your problems and your actions, goddammit. What would I do to Loretta? Nothing - she has to live with herself. I think her karma will come around on her at some point.

She would honestly have to have a subhuman intellect if this is the best solution she could come up with. Get a cardboard box, put the cat in it, close it up, and drop it off in front of the nearest animal shelter an hour before they open. Not a wonderful course of action for someone who promised care she won’t deliver, but certainly a better one if she’s determined to dump the cat unceremoniously, but if she were not evil enough to be completely indifferent to its fate. How would that have been much harder than what she did? And is it really something that a person of middling intelligence or a poor person couldn’t manage?
As for her being mentally ill or disabled, well, you’re making stuff up every bit as much as you say alphaboi is. She might just as easily be a selfish, heartless bitch as a poor, disabled crazy person who can’t help herself.
Dropping the cat on the side of the road is nearly the same as torturing the cat to death.
Either take care of it or have it put to sleep.
She deserves exactly the same fate that she was trying to inflict on the cat, and just as much mercy and compassion as she showed to it. She could have, and should have, told the family that she wasn’t willing to take care of the cat in the first place, and tried to find at least a temporary home with someone else. Or she could have told the family, after they moved out, that she couldn’t stand the cat any more. At the very, very least, she could have dropped it off at a shelter. It might have been put down, but at least it wouldn’t be scared to death, starving, and probably injured in its last days.
People DO adopt adult cats. The last two cats that I’ve adopted were adults (a year old and four years old) who were given up by their former owners. They are both very loving.
Loretta is a lying sack of shit who has no honor, and she shouldn’t expect any more respect than she gives others, and I hope that someone breaks her heart like she broke that family’s hearts.

Cats are very hardy creatures and perfectly capable of looking after themselves. While this woman let down the cats owner, I doubt the cat felt like it was being tortured.
If the cat was given a vote between becoming “free range” or put to sleep, I’m fairly certain being dumped would win over being killed.
Loretta would make a fucking terrible babysitter and I wouldn’t trust her as far as I could throw her but I don’t think she was cruel…well not to the cat anyway.
Dumping is almost certainly a death sentence to a cat. Some cats will survive. Most will slowly starve, or die of injuries, unless a human looks after them.

I knew I shouldn’t have said anything because the life of the cat is obviously very different in my country to yours.
In New Zealand a dumped cat is probably a very happy cat. Many of our native birds are endangered because of wild cats, so clearly starvation is not an issue. Cats are also VERY good scavengers and extremely good at looking after themselves.
But we don’t have any wildlife who want to have pussy cat for dinner, so (at least) at this end of the world a dumped pussy cat would feel better than a dead cat.
And I fully agree she was cruel to her family.

You missed my point. All I was saying is that without all of the information, it’s crazy to condemn the woman. We’re hearing the story from ONE point-of-view. Who knows? All of this might have happened completely differently than it was explained in the letter.
“Dear Abby” isn’t exactly a pinnacle of good journalism. It’s not like they fact-check the letters before publishing them. That is why I’m inclined to give the woman the benefit of the doubt.
